Williamsport, Pa. (Feb. 12, 2020) - Lycoming College (16-7, 9-5) held on for a 67-63 win over Alvernia University (11-11, 7-7) on Wednesday night in MAC Commonwealth Men's Basketball action at Lycoming.
The Warriors got off to a fast start, knocking down 5 3-pointers on their first six possessions to lead 18-15 early.
The Golden Wolves kept it close though, and got within one point on a
Malik Green layup with 12:33 remaining in the game.
Alvernia tied it up at 20-20 two minutes later on a
Steve Pierce layup, but the Warriors would then go on an 11-1 run over the next five minutes to jump out to a 31-21 lead with 5:13 remaining in the first half.
The Golden Wolves then went on a 13-2 run of their own that included two 3-pointer from
Keon Taylor to close out the half with a 34-33 lead.
Alvernia extended its lead to five, 48-43, on a
Mickeel Allen layup and converted and-one opportunity, but the Warriors used a layup and a 3-pointer off a steal to score five points in 30
seconds and tie it up at 48-48.
The Warriors would then take the lead on a Darius Dangerfield jumper with 12:52 remaining.
The Golden Wolves took back the lead on a jumper from Thomas and expanded it to three points on a Taylor jumper.
The Warriors once again took advantage of turnovers, and retook the lead on a 3-pointer off of an Allen turnover 4:27 remaining.Â
Lycoming would hold the lead the rest of the way, with Alvernia never getting closer than two points away.
Despite fouling out with seven minutes remaining in the game, Thomas led Alvernia with 26 points. Allen led the rebounding efforts with 8 boards.
With the loss, Alvernia drops to sixth place in the MAC Commonwealth at 7-7. The Golden Wolves sit a half of game out of fifth, where Albright and Hood each sit at 7-6. The Golden Wolves swept the season series over the Blazers, and defeated the Lions in the first game of the series back in January. Alvernia will face Albright in a playoff implicating game to close out the regular season on Tuesday, February 18th at Alvernia.
Before taking on Albright on the 18th, Alvernia travels to Widener on Saturday for a 3:00 PM tip. The Pride have already secured their spot in the MAC Commonwealth Playoff.
