Taylor Leads Alvernia To Big Win At Widener, 67-64

Wolves Are Win And In Against Albright On Tuesday

Chester, Pa. (Feb. 15, 2020) - Kean Taylor and Avery Walker both hit a pair of free throws in the final 21 seconds and Alvernia University (12-11, 8-7) held on for a huge 67-64 win at Widener University (18-5, 11-3) Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth men's basketball action at Widener.

Mikeel Allen scored on a layup with 1:32 left to tie the score at 61-all and a layup from Steve Pierce with 52 seconds left put Alvernia up two.  After Widener went 1-for-2 from the line, Walker and Taylor sandwiched a Pride layup with a pair of free throws each.

Alvernia fouled with a 3-point lead on the last Widener possession.  Connor Laverty missed the front end of the 1-and-1 and Justin Thomas secured the rebound for the win.

Alvernia got scoring from five different players in a 17-3 run midway through the first that put the Wolves up 25-10.  Alvernia had a 36-17 lead with 4:33 left in the first half, but went scoreless from the floor the rest of the half while Widener chipped away with seven points to trail 36-24 at the break.

The lead was still 19 points, 53-34, but Alvernia went 1-for-10 from the floor and turned it over seven times over the next 7:54 while Widener put together a 20-3 run to cut to 56-54.

Alvernia answered with four quick points, but Widener scored seven straight for a 61-59 lead before the late Allen layup.

Alvernia moves back into fifth place in the standings and will host crosstown rival Albright College on Tuesday.  A win and the Wolves are likely in the playoffs.  The amount of teams left that could be in a tie at 9-7 leaves the outcome a little hazy this far out.  A loss and they will certainly need a lot of help.

Taylor finished with 18 points and seven assists.  Allen had 14 points and 11 boards, Walker had 13 points, and Pierce finished with 11 points.  Widener had three players reach double figures led by Laverty who totaled 17.
