Softball Sweeps Opening Day At Shenandoah

Winchester, Va. (Feb. 23, 2020) - Alvernia University (2-0) swept Shenandoah University (0-4) with a 6-0 win in game one and a come from behind 9-4 win in game two in the 2020 season opener at Shenandoah. 

In game one of the doubleheader, Alvernia's Alyssa Acker drove in JoAnnah Lim - who reached on a single through the left side - with a single up the middle to put the Golden Wolves up 1-0 in the first inning.

The Golden Wolves then plated four in the second inning to go up 5-0. With the bases loaded, Lim drove in Ally Decker to go up 2-0. Sarah Bystrycki then drove in Sarah Reinert and Analise Fouracre on a single to left. Acker capped off the inning with her second RBI of the game on a single to the left gap to bring in Lim. 

Alvernia scored its sixth and final run of game one on a Reinert single up the middle to drive in Megan Poley. 

Alvernia had a strong defensive showing in game one behind pitcher Riley Shields. Shields went the distance striking out five and allowing just three hits in the shutout. 

In game two, Shenandoah struck first with a two RBI single to left in the second inning to go up 2-0. The Hornets went up 3-0 in the third off an RBI single.

The Golden Wolves got two back in the top of fourth on a single by Fouracre to drive in Kerstin Koenig and Devan Hudson.

Alvernia then tied it up and took the lead with a three run top of the fifth. Shields got the Golden Wolves started with a double to right center to bring in Reinert, and Bystrycki brought in the second run of the inning on the next at bat with a single up the middle to bring in Shields. Acker drove in the final run of the inning on a double to deep center to bring in Bystrycki and give Alvernia the 5-3 lead.

Alvernia's offense kept its foot on the gas with Reinert taking advantage of Hornet errors to score on Lim's at bat to put the Golden Wolves up 6-3.

The Golden Wolves capped off the game with a three inning top of the seventh. Hudson drove in two runs on a double to left to bring in Acker and Bystrycki and Koenig drove in Sara Campbell for Alvernia's final run of the game.

Alvernia gave up one run in the bottom of the seventh en route to taking the 9-3 win.

Kealey Smith and Decker split time in circle with Decker picking up the win in four innings of relief. Decker gave up three hits and struck out two.

Alvernia's next games will be in Clermont, Florida for Spring Break. Alvernia will play ten games while in Florida, starting off with a games against Mitchell and Saint Benedict on Sunday, March 1st to start off the week.
