Golden Wolves Take Two On Opening Day Of Spring Break

Alvernia Defeats College of Saint Benedict In Extra Inning Thriller

Clermont, Florida (March 1, 2020) - Alvernia University (4-0) swept its opening day of spring break with a come-from-behind 6-2 win over Mitchell College (2-2) and a 2-1 extra inning win over the College of Saint Benedict (2-2).

In game one of the day, the Mariners struck first with a two inning first - scoring runs on a bases loaded walk and on a fielder's choice.

The Golden Wolves got one back in their half of the first on a sacrifice fly by Hope Robinson to score Alyssa Acker.

After going hitless in the third and fourth innings, Alvernia's offense came alive in the bottom of the fifth. Nicole August got things started with a single through the right side, and Analise Fouracre followed that with a single through the left side. After stealing third, August was driven in on a Sarah Reinert single up the middle to tie it up at 2-2.

Later in the fifth, with the bases loaded, Riley Shields drove in Fouracre on a fielder's choice to give Alvernia the 3-2 lead. On the next at bat, JoAnnah Lim and Reinert scored on a fielder's choice for Alyssa Acker to put the Golden Wolves up 5-2. Devan Hudson then drove in Megan Poley, who was pinch running for Shields, to put Alvernia up 6-2.

After allowing a runner to reach second in the top of the sixth, Ally Decker struck out two and forced an infield to end the scoring threat.

Alvernia's defense did not allow a runner to reach second in the top of the seventh as the Golden Wolves took the 6-2 win,

Reinert led Alvernia's offense in game one with two hits and an RBI. Decker allowed just three hits and struck out three in the seven inning win.

In game two both defenses held strong for the first four innings, but Alvernia was able to break through first.

In the top of the fifth, Hudson reached first on an error by the shortstop to lead off the inning. Sara Campbell came into pinch run for Hudson, and made her way to third over the next two at bats, and was driven in on a field error during Fouracre's at bat to give Alvernia the 1-0 lead.

Saint Benedict tied it up in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single to make it 1-1.

The Golden Wolves went three up three down in their half of the seventh to keep it at 1-1.

Saint Benedict doubled with one out in the top of the seventh, but Shields forced a fly out for the second out of the inning, and then struck out Gabby Spencer to force extra innings.

With the international tie breaker rule in effect, August started the top of the eighth on second. With one out, she advanced to third on a ground out by Reinert. She was unable to score as Lim grounded out to end the inning.

CSB sacrifice bunted their runner to third to start off their half of the eighth. Shields then forced two infield pop ups to end the inning.

Lim started on second for Alvernia in the top of the ninth, and was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Shields to start the inning. With two outs, Lim scored on a double to deep left by Kerstin Koenig to give Alvernia the 2-1 advantage.

Shields then struck out three in the bottom of the ninth to give Alvernia the 2-1 win.

Koenig led Alvernia's offense in game two with a hit and an RBI.

Shields struck out eight over nine innings of work.

Alvernia will face Northland at 10 AM on Monday and Moravian at noon in day two of spring break.
