Dallas, Pa. (Feb. 27, 2020) - Alvernia University (10-5, 1-0) rallied to win three straight sets in a 3-1 win over Misericordia University (12-8, 2-1) Thursday evening in MAC men's volleyball action at Misericordia.

The Cougars built an early lead in the opening set then held on for a 25-22 win earning the last two points after the Golden Wolves had trimmed it to 23-22.

Alvernia had a run of five straight points midway through the second set--aided by four straight errors from Misericordia--that gave the guests a 17-15 lead. Alvernia had another quick three-point to get to 24-20 and took the second set 25-22.

The Wolves trailed 19-17 in the third set, but put together a run of seven straight with kills coming from four different players and Mitchell Sterkenberg adding an ace. Misericordia managed to fight off one set point on a setting error, but a kill from Logan McGinley ended the set, 25-20.

Alvernia built a big lead early in the fourth only to see Misericordia come back to tie it three times, the final time at 20-20. Alvernia scored three straight points the finally closed the match on a Misericordia error.

Josh Stewart led the way for Alvernia with 17 kills and 14 digs. Mike Monczewski had 41 assists. Stewart matched his career high in kills and set a new personal best in digs surpassing his previous mark of 11 from last season.

Alvernia continues the MAC schedule at Stevenson on Wednesday during spring break. The match was originally scheduled as a home match, but was moved to Stevenson with Alvernia on break.
