Danville, Va. (Feb. 29, 2020) - Alvernia University (2-1) jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held on for an 11-8 win over Averett University (0-4) on Saturday at Averett.

Chris Garcia put the Golden Wolves on board with a goal three minutes into the game, and then Alvernia scored a string of three man-up goals in 40 seconds to go up 4-0.

Neither team would score for nearly 15 minutes, but Alvernia's Keith Lake would break the scoreless streak with a goal with 12:43 remaining in the second quarter.

Averett got one back with their first goal of the game 43 seconds later, but Sam St. Croix extended Alvernia's lead back to five with a goal with five minutes remaining.

Averett scored the last two goals of the half to make it 6-3 going into the break.

The Golden Wolves never let the Cougars get closer than three as Alvernia took the 11-8 win.

Zach Bowman led Alvernia's offensive efforts with three goals and two assists. St. Croix finished the game with goals for the Golden Wolves.

Matt Thibault picked up the win with a 12 save effort over 60 minutes.

Alvernia continues south for spring break, and will face Johnson & Wales in Haines City, Florida on Thursday.
