Valley Forge, Pa. (Feb. 3, 2020) - Alvernia University (9-11) overcame a five-point halftime deficit and
Julia Ewen recorded just the third 20-rebound game since 2001 to lead Alvernia to a 67-53 win over the University of Valley Forge (3-12) Monday night in non-conference play at Valley Forge.
With 20 rebounds on the night, Ewen joins the likes of Tanisha Giddens and
Kayla Long to record a 20-rebound game. Giddens picked up 24 rebounds in 2001 and Long also picked up 24 in 2013.
The Patriots got off to a 5-0 start before
Jannelle Robinson made a layup for Alvernia's first points of the night four minutes into action.
The Golden Wolves would take their first lead of the night on a
Gabriella De Vito layup with 2:26 left in the first, but the Patriots would hit a layup and a free throw to take a one point lead into the second quarter.
The Patriots would extend their lead to 10 on a 3-pointer with 3:14 left in the second, but the Golden Wolves would make the last five points of the quarter to start chipping away at the lead.
Alvernia took the lead for the final time on a layup from Ewen with 6:55 left in the third, and would hold it the rest of the way. The Golden Wolves would hold the Patriots to just 10 points in the third while scoring 24 of their own.
Alvernia extended its lead to as much as 18 twice in the fourth quarter - off of a jumper by
Amber Orban and again on a layup from
Torie Zerbe.
In addition to her 20 rebounds, Ewen finished with eight points, two blocks, and two steals.
Torie Zerbe with a 17 point and 12 rebound double-double. De Vito finished with 15 points, and Orban also reached double digits with 10.
Alvernia returns to MAC Commonwealth play on Wednesday with a road game at Arcadia.
