Golden Wolves Pick Up Big Win At Hood, 90-85

Frederick, Md. (Feb. 8, 2020) – Alvernia University (11-10, 7-6) picked up a crucial MAC Commonwealth win over Hood College (13-8, 6-6), 90-85, on Saturday afternoon in conference play at Hood.
 
The Blazers led by as much as 18 points, 37-19, with 5:19 remaining in the first half before Alvernia began to chip away.
 
Avery Walker made a layup to with 4:58 remaining to spark a 17-4 run for the Golden Wolves to close out the half. Steve Pierce closed out the run for Alvernia with two made free throws to cut Alvernia's deficit down to 41-36,
 
The Golden Wolves tied it up at 43-43 with a Malik Green jumper 1:10 into the second half.
 
The Blazers and Golden Wolves traded the lead for the next five minutes before Mickeel Allen made a layup to put Alvernia ahead, 60-57, for the final time.

Alvernia then extended its lead to ten, 72-62, on a Steve Pierce layup with 7:31 remaining, but the Blazers started to chip back.
 
With 4:47 remaining, Evan Wang knocked down a 3-pinter to bring the Blazers within two, 74-72.
 
The Blazers never got any closer, as Alvernia held on for the 90-85 win.
 
Alvernia had two players, Justin Thomas and Malik Green, reach 20 points on the afternoon. Thomas finished with 23 points, and Green finished with 20 points off the bench. Mickeel Allen finished with a ten point, ten rebound double-double. Avery Walker finished 7-for-11 from the field for 16 points and added eight rebounds.
 
With the win, Alvernia moves into fourth place in MAC Commonwealth standings. The Golden Wolves take on Lycoming on Wednesday, with the Warriors currently sitting in second place. Widener, who Alvernia plays on Saturday, clinched a playoff spot today with a win over Messiah earlier today.
