Second Half Push Lifts Cabrini Over Alvernia, 4-2

Radnor, Pa. (Oct. 12, 2021) - Alvernia University (6-7) was blanked in the second half as Cabrini University (6-6) came away with a 4-2 win over the Golden Wolves on Tuesday night in non-conference field hockey action at Cabrini.

The Golden Wolves got on the board first when senior Maria Panettieri, who has played most of her career as a defender, scored her second goal of her collegiate career. Panettieri knocked in a ball on a diving shot off a tap by Hailey Miller to put the Golden Wolves up 1-0.

After over 15 minutes of scoreless play, Cabrini tied things up when Caroline Gallagher netted her first of the night.

The tie would not last long as 90 seconds later Miller found Felicia Getz to put the Golden Wolves up 2-1.

Alvernia appeared to be on track to enter the half leading 2-1, but the Cavalier had other plans. With just under ten seconds left in the first half, Gallagher found the back of the net for the second time to tie it up at 2-2 going into the break.

What would end up being Alvernia's only shot of the second half came just over five minutes into the third quarter when a shot by Alyssa Krady was blocked by Cabrini.

Cabrini took advantage of Alvernia's offensive slowdown and picked up its own pace. Cabrini fired off five shots in a four minute span, but Alvernia held strong. The sixth shot in Cabrini's offensive barrage broke through as Kelly Sweeney put the Cavaliers up 3-2 with just under four minutes left in the third.

While holding Alvernia shotless, the Cavaliers added an insurance goal to go up 4-2. Gallagher sealed the win for Cabrini with her third of the night in the 59th minute.

Lexi Boettcher played all 60 minutes for Alvernia, making six saves.

The Golden Wolves return to their MAC Commonwealth schedule on Saturday at Widener.
