Reading, Pa. (Oct. 19, 2021) - Alvernia University (10-4, 3-2) out shot Lebanon Valley College (11-3, 4-2) 13-4 on net, but the Dutchmen came out on top with the 1-0 win over the Golden Wolves on Tuesday night in MAC Commonwealth men's soccer action.
The difference maker on the night was a successful penalty kick in the 27th minute by Lebanon Valley to give the Dutchmen the 1-0 advantage, and, ultimately, the 1-0 win.Â
The Golden Wolves had the first look on net, with Evan Bauer getting a look in the 4th minute. Lebanon Valley's Sean Quirk made his first save of the night to keep it at 0-0 early.
The Dutchmen and Golden Wolves continued to alternate shots up until the 27th minute when Alvernia committed a foul in the box.Â
Lebanon Valley's Peter Foerster went to the line for the Dutchmen. Foerster shot left while Alvernia's Ben Solsky dove right as Foerster converted the shot for the Dutchmen to put them up 1-0.
Alvernia's Ryan Kuster got a shot off on net in the 31st minute, but was unable to convert. That was Alvernia's last shot of the first half as Lebanon Valley took the 1-0 lead into the half.
The Golden Wolves came into the second half in full control. The Golden Wolves fired off six shots in the first six minutes, but Lebanon Valley was able to hold off the surge to keep the 1-0 advantage.
Alvernia continued its offensive push, but Lebanon Valley got its best look of the night to extend its lead in the 55th minute. Lebanon Valley's Connor Given sent in a rocket of a shot from deep, but the shot was just high as it bounced off the crossbar to keep it a 1-0 game.Â
The Golden Wolves nearly evened it up in the 71st minute when Nick Denlinger sent a shot in towards the bottom left corner, but Quirk was able to get to the shot to keep Lebanon Valley up 1-0.
The Golden Wolves continued to send shots in on net, but the Dutchmen held them off all the way through as Lebanon Valley came away with the 1-0 win.
Nick Denlinger, Gabe Wunderlich, and Kuster all finished with three shots on goal for Alvernia. Ben Solsky played all 90 minutes, making three saves.
With the win, Lebanon Valley jumped Alvernia in MAC Commonwealth standings. Lebanon Valley moved into third place in the MAC Commonwealth, while Alvernia dropped to fourth. The Golden Wolves have three conference games remaining.
Alvernia takes a break from its MAC Commonwealth schedule for the last time on Thursday when the Golden Wolves travel to Rutgers-Camden.Â
