Ben Solsky tied the single-season shutout record and
Cameron Rowe scored in the 79
th minute to lift Alvernia University (11-4) to a 1-0 win over Rutgers-Camden(7-7-2) on Thursday night in non-conference men's soccer action at Rutgers-Camden.
Solsky recorded his eighth shutout in net on the season for Alvernia with the 1-0 win. The junior keeper from Sinking Spring is third Alvernia goalie to record eight shutouts on the season. He joins the company of
Richard Kessler who recorded eight shutouts in 2006, and Zach Rider who recorded eight shutouts in a season twice in his career – first in 2014 and again in 2017.
The Scarlet Raptors started strong, tallying three shots and two corners in the first 16 minutes of the contest. Alvernia recorded its first shot off the foot of
Travis Slear in the 19
th minute, which was saved by the keeper.
As the half progressed, Rutgers-Camden continued to push the pace as it recorded the final eight shots in the first half. Despite the offensive pressure, the Golden Wolves' defense held firm, able to keep the score tied 0-0 going into the half.
The second half saw Alvernia take a quick shot in the first 47 seconds, with Slear again putting one on net. This shot was once again saved by the keeper. The Scarlet Raptors continued to apply pressure, tallying four corners and one-shot in the first 20 minutes of the second half.
As Rutgers-Camden took its fifth corner of the half, the ball bounced out of the box. This allowed Senior
Braden Kreider to push the pace down the field. He was able to find
Cameron Rowe, who tucked the ball into the bottom left of the net to give Alvernia the lead in the 79
th minute, 1-0. Rowe has three goals on the season, all of which are game-winning goals.
Rutgers-Camden tried to draw things even, Solsky and the Alvernia defense were able to hold the Scarlet Raptors off. The Golden Wolves went on to win the match 1-0 to give them their 11
th win of the season. This marks the most wins for the Alvernia men's soccer team since 2014.
Solsky faced 15 shots on the night, recording eight saves, in his record-tying night.
Alvernia returns to action this Saturday with a crucial MAC Commonwealth matchup at Stevenson. Stevenson sits in second in the MAC Commonwealth with a 4-1 record in conference play. The Golden Wolves are sitting in fourth place with a 3-2 record.
