Owings Mills, Md. (Oct. 23, 2021) - With four saves in net, Alvernia University's (12-4, 4-2)
Ben Solsky set a new single-season record for shutouts in a season as the Golden Wolves defeated Stevenson University (8-7-2, 4-2) 1-0 in a crucial MAC Commonwealth win at Stevenson.
Solsky recorded his ninth shutout in net for Alvernia this season with the 1-0 win. The junior keeper is the first keeper to record more than eight shutouts in a single season for Alvernia. He betters the record of eight shutouts previously held by Richard Kessler who recorded eight shutouts in 2006, and Zach Rider who recorded eight shutouts in a season twice in his career – first in 2014 and again in 2017.
The Golden Wolves sent 12 shots at net in the first half, but were unable to breakthrough Stevenson's keeper over the opening 45 minutes.
Alvernia was slower to send a ball at net in the second half, with the Golden Wolves' first two shots of the second half occurring in the 76th and 81st minute of action - both by Nick Denlinger.
Then, in the 83rd minute, Alvernia made its move.
From 20 yards out, Gabe Wunderlich came in and shot just outside the left hash across the net to score just inside the right post and put Alvernia up 1-0.
Alvernia, behind Solsky, held off any further pushes from the Mustangs to secure the record breaking win for Alvernia.
With the win, Alvernia also clinched a berth in the MAC Commonwealth postseason. The Golden Wolves have not yet locked up a seed, but are sitting in t-3rd with two conference games to go.
Alvernia takes on Albright on Wednesday and Hood on Saturday to close out its regular season. .
