Frederick, Md. (Oct. 2, 2021)- Alvernia University (6-4, 3-0) put on a scoring clinic to defeat Hood College (3-7, 0-3) 6-0 in MAC Commonwealth field hockey action Saturday afternoon at Hood.
Alvernia wasted no time getting a strong offensive push as the Golden Wolves secured three corners in the first two minutes of the contest.
Alyssa Krady was able to net the first goal of the contest at the 2:41 mark with a shot that slipped past the goalie.
The Golden Wolves did not need to wait long for their second goal as
Makenzie Smeigh was next to find the back of the net. Alvernia continued to apply pressure in the opening stanza with another corner opportunity that resulted in a shot by
Madison Potthoff, which she sent wide of the net. The Golden Wolves closed out the first quarter up, 2-0.
Alvernia pushed the pace in the second quarter with
Kaitlyn Merritt, netting her only goal of the contest. Hood's offense pushed back in the second quarter attempting two shots.
Hannah Wolfe was able to save both shots and kept the Blazers off the scoreboard. The second stanza ended 3-0 in favor of Alvernia.
The Golden Wolves continued to apply pressure, taking five shots in the first 11 minutes of the third quarter with none finding their way past the goalie. Alvernia was eventually able to add to their lead late in the third as
Felicia Getz recorded the Golden Wolves' fourth goal. The third quarter ended with Alvernia leading, 4-0.
The Golden Wolves were not content as
Brooke Spezialetti recorded a shot just 14 seconds into the fourth quarter. As the quarter progressed, Smeigh was able to secure her second goal of the contest off an assist from Rachel Beemer. Alvernia continued to apply offensive pressure late into the match with
Madison Speece and Potthoff both attempting shots.
The final goal of the contest came off of a penalty shot by
Gianna DeGregory in the closing minutes. The Golden Wolves held Hood scoreless as the game ended, 6-0 in favor of Alvernia.
Hannah Wolfe saw two shots, saving both during the contest.
The Golden Wolves return to action Wednesday at Susquehanna.
