Monarch Touchdown With 29 Seconds Remaining Lifts King's Over Alvernia, 10-7

Wilkes, Pa. (Oct. 2, 2021) - King's University (2-2, 1-2) scored a touchdown on an 11-yard rush with 29 seconds remaining to lift King's to a 10-7 win over Alvernia University (0-5, 0-3) on Saturday afternoon in MAC football action at King's.

Alvernia received the ball to start the game, but were forced to a 3-and-out and punted the ball away to its own 35 yard line.

King's picked up 17 yards on two rushes to open its first series, but Alvernia stalled the Monarchs and forced them to punt away.

Alvernia and King's traded short possessions before King's was able to string together a drive on its third possession of the game.

King's marched the ball down the field after taking over on its own 33 yard line with just over six minutes left in the first quarter. After several completions and three rushes for 25 yards, King's faced a 1st and 10 on Alvernia's 17 yard line. A five yard completion put the Monarch's on Alvernia's 12 yard line, but a tackle for a loss by Alvernia's Tzyhir Morris pushed King's back to the 13. Facing a 3rd and 6, King's ran for a two yard gain to set up for a 28 yard field goal attempt. King's attempt was good as the Monarchs took a 3-0 lead to close out the first quarter. The drive knocked over five minutes off the clock.

The Golden Wolves responded with their first decent drive of the game. Alvernia used eight plays to go 29 yards, but the drive stalled on the King's 39 as Alvernia punted away for a touchback.

After another 3-and-out possession by King's, Alvernia got the ball back on 46 yard line with 10:49 remaining in the half. Alvernia ran 10 plays on the drive and knocked over six minutes off the clock, but Alvernia netted just four yards on the drive. The Golden Wolves committed three penalties and were sacked twice on the drive to net only four yards. Alvernia punted it away to the Monarch's five yard line.

After forcing King's to punt on its ensuing drive, Alvernia got the ball back on its own 33 with 1:19 left in the half. Alvernia drove the ball down into field goal range following a 19-yard completion to Neeko Scurlock to put Alvernia on the King's 24 yard line. But, a personal foul penalty on Alvernia on the next play pushed Alvernia out of range and halted any momentum Alvernia picked up moving down the field. Kevin Washington went on to throw three straight incompletions as time expired in the half and King's took a 3-0 lead into the break.

Neither team could get anything going in the first three drives to open the second half.

With 5:12 left in the third quarter, Alvernia received the ball on its own 12 yard line. A one yard rush and a five yard completion moved Alvernia up to its 18 yard line after two plays. Washington then completed a 14 yard pass to Cameron Fetrow, and a personal foul on the Monarchs moved the ball forward an additional 15 yards to Alvernia's 47 yard line. A second completion to Fetrow, this time for 11 yards, moved Alvernia into King's territory and gave the Golden Wolves a fresh set of downs. As time moved into the fourth quarter, Alvernia faced a fourth and four on the King's 33 yard line. Alvernia picked up more than enough as Washington connected with Neeko Scurlock for a 33 yard touchdown to put Alvernia up 6-3. The PAT by Ryan Long was successful as Alvernia held the 7-3 advantage with 14:43 remaining in the game.

The Monarchs picked up two first downs on their next drive, but faced a fourth and eight after the drive stalled on Alvernia's 36 yard line. King's opted to go for it, but Alvernia's Jyleen Neals picked off King's at the Alvernia 27 to give Alvernia the ball back with 11:31 remaining.

Alvernia ran off nearly six minutes on the next drive, but were ultimately forced to punt the ball away after the 8-play, 19 yard drive stalled on the Alvernia 47.

King's took over with 5:53 remaining on its own 19 and got to work. After King's moved down the field to Alvernia's 35 yard line, Alvernia held the Monarchs to a 4th and 6. With 1:46 left on the clock, King's had to go for it, and successfully completed a pass over the middle and through three Alvernia defenders to give King's a fresh set of downs on Alvernia's 19 yard line. Alvernia again forced a fourth down, this time a 4th and 2 from Alvernia's 11. King's QB Tyler Moore took the snap and scrambled for the 1st down and went an additional nine yards for a Monarch's touchdown to put King's in front 9-7. King's converted the PAT to make it 10-7 just under 30 seconds remaining.

Alvernia received the kickoff at its own 39 and returned the ball to its 33 yard line. With 21 seconds on the clock and all three timeouts remaining, Alvernia set out to work.

Washington completed three short passes for Alvernia to move the Golden Wolves up to their own 47. Washington's next pass fell incomplete across the middle in the direction of Joseph Perkins with seven seconds left on the clock. Washington dropped back again, but King's was able to bring him down for a 10 yard loss. Alvernia called a quick timeout with one second left on the clock. In the final attempt of the game, Washington got tripped up and could not get a solid pass off to Antwann Cade. Time expired as Alvernia fell 10-7.

Washington attempted a program-record 35 pass attempts on the afternoon, and made a program-record 20 completions. His 20 completions were good for 170 yards. Scurlock led all receivers with 103 yards on a program-record 11 receptions. Malcolm Carey ran for 44 yards on 14 attempts. Morris led Alvernia's defense with 12 tackles.

Alvernia returns home next weekend for a MAC matchup with Widener University. Kickoff is set for noon as part of Alvernia's Homecoming and Family Weekend.
