Pride Down Golden Wolves, 37-7

Reading, Pa. (October 9, 2021) - Alvernia University (0-6, 0-4) was held to just seven points as Widener University (5-1, 3-1) took a 37-7 win over the Golden Wolves on Saturday afternoon during Alvernia's Homecoming and Family Weekend.

The Golden Wolves trailed just 20-7 at the half, but Widener blanked Alvernia in the second half while scoring 17 points of its own for the 37-7 win.

Widener won the toss and elected to defer, giving the Golden Wolves the opportunity to get on the board first. Alvernia got things started on its own 30 yard line and Malcolm Carey took the first play of the game for an eight yard rush. The Golden Wolves gained a first down on the next play - a two yard rush by Carey - but were held up following a four yard rush and two incomplete passes. Alvernia punted the ball away and Widener took over at its own 11.

Widener started working its way down the field and found itself in a 1st and 10 situation on Alvernia's 28 yard line. Widener quarterback Triston Harris found James Gillespie for a 28 yard touchdown connection to give Widener the 7-0 advantage.

Alvernia got the ball back on its own 35 yard line, but the Pride held the Golden Wolves to a 3-and-out. The highlight of the drive came with punter Ryan Long pinning the Pride on their own one-yard line.

The Pride got to work though, taking the first play of the drive 35 yards on a 35 yard reception. The Pride continued to work their way down the field, but Alvernia made a fourth down stop on its own 22. Widener attempted the field and the attempt was good to give the Pride the 10-0 lead.

The Golden Wolves were stopped again and their punt to end the drive was blocked, giving the Pride the ball at their own 46 yard line.

The Pride were again working their way down the field when the Pride fumbled the ball away. Marc Kauffman made the recovery for Alvernia at its own 23 yard line.

Alvernia's drive went just five yards as the Pride took back over at its own 45.

Later in the drive, the Pride faced a 4th and 2 situation on Alvernia's 16 yard line. The Pride converted the fourth down and then a targeting penalty on the Golden Wolves put the Pride on the five yard line. The next play, the Pride's Hirschman caught a five yard touchdown pass to put Widener up 17-0.

The next drive of the game, Alvernia strung together its best drive of the game. With the drive starting on Alvernia's 25, a completed pass to Neeko Scurlock followed by a facemask penalty on Widener on the same play put Alvernia up to Widener's 43 yard line. A pass interference play on the next play moved Alvernia down to Widener's 28. Following a few minimal yardage plays, Kevin Washington scrambled for an 11 yard rush to put Alvernia down at Widener's six. A one yard rush by Carey put Alvernia on the five yard line. Following an incomplete pass by Washington, Washington took it himself on a five yard scramble to put Alvernia on the board. Long's extra point attempt was good, making it a 17-7 game.

Widener responded by driving the ball right down the field to the Alvernia 13 on just two completed passes - a 17 yard completion and a 40 yard completion. Alvernia made the stop, forcing three incompletions, but Widener was in position to make a successful field goal to go up 20-7.

Alvernia got the ball back with just under a minute left in the half, but couldn't make anything happen as the Golden Wolves trailed the Pride 20-7 going into the break.

Alvernia appeared to get a spark of momentum coming out of the half when Widener fumbled the opening kickoff into the arms of Alvernia's Jared Montalto. But, Alvernia went three and out on the ensuing drive to put the ball away to the Widener 24.

Widener possessed the ball for nearly seven minutes as the Pride worked their way down the field. Widener capped off the drive with a six-yard completion to Gillespie to extend the Pride's lead to 20 points, 27-7.

The first play of Alvernia's ensuing drive, the Golden Wolves threw an interception to give the ball right back to the Pride on the Alvernia eight yard line.

The Pride wasted no time, needing just one completed pass to extend their lead to 34-7.

Alvernia continued to struggle offensively on the next drive, again throwing an interception to give the Pride the ball back.

The Pride took advantage again, taking the next drive down for a field goal to go up 37-7.

Widener would go on to run the clock out for the 37-7 win.

Alvernia returns to action on Saturday at Lebanon Valley before the Golden Wolves have a bye the following week.
