Reading, Pa. (Oct. 2, 2021)- Alvernia University (7-2, 1-0) scored two goals in the first half to take a 2-0 win over Widener University (4-5, 1-0) and secure its second straight shutout on Saturday in MAC Commonwealth men's soccer action at Alvernia.
Widener applied pressure early on Alvernia as the Pride recorded three shots in the first 12 minutes of the match.
Alvernia's first shot on net was successful as the Golden Wolves took a 1-0 lead off the foot of
Gabe Wunderlich in the 17
th minute. Wunderlich was in the right place at the right time as a Widener's keeper miss-cleared a cross straight to Wunderlich, who fired it on net.
Alvernia continued to test the Pride, with
Cameron Rowe and
Matthew Kerr both recording shots of their own.
After
Ryan Kuster was fouled in the box to secure a penalty kick, Alvernia looked to extended its lead to two. Kuster drew the keeper right, and the keeper dove with the fake, while Kuster fired into the left corner of the net to put Alvernia up 2-0.
Widener took the first shot of the second half, which was once again saved by
Ben Solsky. The Golden Wolves secured two shots of their own, with
Nick Denlinger sending both shots careening high right of the net.
Despite the Pride taking five shots in the final 18 minutes of the contest, none were able to slip by Solsky. Alvernia held onto the lead as the second half ended, securing the win 2-0.
Solsky faced eleven shots, securing five saves during the contest.
The Golden Wolves return to action Tuesday at Eastern University.
