Second Half Goal Lifts Widener Over Alvernia, 1-0

Reading, Pa. (Oct. 2, 2021) - A goal in the 74th minute was enough for Widener University (6-2, 1-0) as the Pride took a 1-0 win over Alvernia University (3-6, 0-1) on Saturday evening in the MAC Commonwealth Women's Soccer opener at Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves held off a strong offensive showing by the Pride in the first half. Alvernia did not allow a shot on goal in the opening 23 minutes of competition. When the Pride were able to get a shot off, Brynn Bock made the save.

The Pride's offense fired up in the final seven minutes of the half - including four shots on goal in three minutes - but Alvernia's defense, behind Bock, held off the Pride to go into the half at a 0-0 tie.

While Alvernia was unable to possess the ball steadily in the second half, the Golden Wolves defense continued to hold strong. Alvernia allowed just two shots in the opening 25 minutes of the second half.

In 74th minute, the Pride were finally able to break through. Emily Schall, positioned just outside the right side of the box, sent a pass up to the top of the box to Emily Midura. Midura then fired a quick shot into the back of the net past Lily Sankey, who took over in net for the second half.

The Pride nearly extended their lead twice in the final 16 minutes of action, but both shots went off the crossbar to keep the game at 1-0.

Alvernia did not get a shot off the entire game as the Pride took the 1-0 win.

Bock finished her time in net with five saves, and Sankey made two during her rotation.

Alvernia returns to action on Wednesday at Eastern.
