Cortland Spoils Alvernia's Season-Opener, 7-2

Wyomissing, Pa. (Oct. 29, 2021) - SUNY Cortland (1-0) scored six goals in the final two periods en route to a 7-2 win over Alvernia University (1-0) in the 2021-22 women's ice hockey season-opener on Friday night at Body Zone.

Alvernia opened the scoring when Sydney Bradley found Olivia Gilida off the left edge while the Golden Wolves were on a power play. Gilida fired a shot in and put Alvernia up 1-0 at 15:11 on the clock.

Cortland wasted no time responding as the Red Dragons took the ensuing faceoff down the ice and put a shot on net to tie it up at 1-1 just 20 seconds later.

Alvernia's defense, behind goalie Julia Beaven, killed off three penalties in the first period to keep it locked at 1-1 going into the second period.

Just 23 seconds into the second period, Cortland took the lead on a Katie DeVoe goal and extended its lead to 3-1 90 seconds later on a goal by Jillian Hlasnick.

The Red Dragons built their lead up to 4-1 in the 19th minute off a goal by Dany Donegan.

With one second left on the clock Alvernia's Lauren Czymek found Alex Robertson off the post. Robertson quick got a shot off before time expired to make it a 4-2 game going into the third period.

Cortland went on to blank Alvernia in the third period while scoring three goals of its own - one shorthanded and one on a power play - to take the 7-2 win.

Beaven finished the night with 54 saves, including 22 in the third period.

Alvernia returns to action tomorrow hosting Morrisville State.
