Reading, Pa. (Oct. 9, 2021) - #7 Messiah University (9-2, 4-0) scored two goals in the final seven minutes to take a 2-1 win over Alvernia University (6-6, 3-1) on Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth action at Alvernia.

Makalya Malcolm tied the game up at 1-1 with just over six minutes remaining before she netted the game winner just two minutes later.

The two teams went scoreless in the first quarter with Messiah's Isabel Villegas making a defensive save to deny Maria Panettieri a goal in the final two minutes of the first quarter and keep the game locked at 0-0.

Just 43 seconds into the second quarter, Alvernia's Hailey Miller fired a shot by Messiah keeper Caite Brubaker to put Alvernia up 1-0. Alvernia did not allow a shot in the second quarter to take the 1-0 lead into the half.

The Golden Wolves applied steady pressure early in the third quarter - recording three consecutive corner opportunities in the first two minutes. Alvernia could not convert though as the game remained 1-0. 

Messiah came into the fourth quarter recording two shots in the first five minutes. With 6:07 left on the clock, Malcolm tied it up at 1-1. Just under two minutes later, Messiah, behind the stick of Malcolm, took the lead at 2-1 after a misclear by the Golden Wolves.

Alvernia fired off two shots on goal in the final 70 seconds, but Brubaker held strong to secure the 2-1 Messiah win.

Hannah Wolfe played all 60 minutes in net for Alvernia, recording four saves. 

Alvernia takes a short break from MAC Commonwealth play on Tuesday with a road game at Cabrini.
