Alvernia Takes Two At Waynesburg Duals

Waynesburg, Pa. (Nov. 20, 2021) - Alvernia University Men's Wrestling went 2-1 on Saturday at the Waynesburg Duals, with its wins coming in dominant fashion.

The Golden Wolves defeated Washington & Jefferson 47-6 and Waynesburg 51-0, but fell to Glenville State, 23-19.

Alvernia vs. Washington and Jefferson
The Golden Wolves started their day off with Washington and Jefferson, and Keito Shaw got things started for Alvernia in the first bout of the day with a 15-3 major decision at the 125 weight class. Anthony Portillo then put Alvernia up 10-0 with a 1:01 pin at 133. Quinn Tobin kept up the pace with a 16-0 technical fall, and Jason Rezac followed that with a 2:35 pin to put Alvernia up 21-0 after the 149 bout. 

Robert Lawlor kept things up for Alvernia with a 9-3 decision at 157, and Matthew Lackman then recorded his first pin of the day with a 1:37 decision at 165 to put Alvernia up 30-0. Following a W&J forfeit at 174, Isaac Kassis picked up a 15-3 major decision at 184 to put Alvernia up 41-0.

W&J's only points of the bout came at the 197 bout with Tonee Ellis being pinned at the 4:45 mark by Alex Donahue. 

The Golden Wolves closed out the bout with Palmer Rodenhaber recording a pin in 56 seconds for the 47-6 win.

Alvernia vs. Glenville State
Shaw picked up the first four points of the bout for Alvernia with a 15-4 major decision, but Glenville State won the next two bouts, including one by a pin, to go up 9-4 over Alvernia. But, a pin in 1:33 by Rezac but Alvernia back in front, 10-9. Glenville and Alvernia traded 3-point decisions, with Glenville taking the 157 bout to go back up 12-10. But, Alvernia retook the lead, 13-12, after Lackman took a 7-1 decision at 165. 

Glenville State picked up five points with a tech. fall at 174, but Kassis got three of those points back with a close 8-7 decision at 184 to make it a 17-16 match in favor of Glenville with two bouts to go. With Glenville getting a pin at 197, the match became out of reach for Alvernia at 23-16. Rodenhaber won his bout by a decision to pick up three points, but that would not be enough as Glenville took the 23-19 win.


Alvernia vs. Waynesburg
Shaw started the match for Alvernia with a 42 second pin at the 125 weight class to put Alvernia up 6-0. After a forfeit by Waynesburg at 133 put Alvernia up 12-0, Tobin added to Alvernia's lead with a 7-1 decision at 141. Rezac picked up Alvernia's second pin of the bout after taking down Waynesburg Coppolo in 2:12 to put Alvernia up 21-0. Robert Lawlor picked up a 10-1 major decision to make it 25-0, and Lackman added another six for Alvernia with a pin at 165. Gavin Hollingsworth made it back-to-back pins for Alvernia with a 2:15 takedown at 174. Isaac Kassis followed that with a 19-1 technical fall and Tonee Ellis made it 45-0 with a 14-7 decision at 197. Palmer Rodehaber capped the day off for Alvernia with a 3:21 pin at 285.
