Golden Wolves Edge Bears, 22-16

Collegeville, Pa. (Nov. 23, 2021) - Alvernia University (3-1) defeated Ursinus College (1-1) off a pin in the final bout for a 22-16 win over the Bears in a non-conference dual match at Ursinus on Tuesday night. 

After Alvernia led by 13-6 midway through the bouts, Ursinus took the lead with two bouts remaining. The Bears and Golden Wolves tied it up in the 197lb bout, but Palmer Rodenhaber secured the team win with a pin in the heavyweight bout to seal the 22-16 win.

Ursinus started off the match with a 3-0 lead after Terry Adams took a 5-4 decision over Alvernia's Keito Shaw in the 125lb bout.

Alvernia tied it up at 3-3 following a 5-3 sudden victory by Anthony Portillo over Romeo Rodriguez in the 133lb bout.

The Golden Wolves then took the lead, 6-3, with Quinn Tobin taking a 7-0 decision at 141.

Jason Rezac tacked another three points onto Alvernia's lead, 9-3, with a 10-4 decision at 149, but Ursinus brought it back within three, 9-6, after Ursinus' Shawn Marchesano took a narrow 4-3 decision over Robert Lawlor.

Matthew Lackman responded for Alvernia in the 165lb bout with a 14-1 major decision to give Alvernia its biggest lead of the night, 13-6, with four bouts remaining. 

Ursinus answered in the 174lb bout after Jason Zollers picked up Ursinus' first major decision of the night, a 13-5 win over Gavin Hollingsworth, to bring Ursinus back within three, 13-10.

A pin by Ursinus' Gary Nagle in 6:13 over Isaac Kassis in the 184lb bout gave Ursinus the lead for the first time since the opening bout, 16-13.

Alvernia again answered, with Tonee Ellis tying it up at 16-16 with a 10-4 decision over Kyle Schaffer in the penultimate bout of the night. 

With the match on the line entering the heavyweight bout, Palmer Rodenhaber pinned Gavin Range in just 2:17 to secure the 22-16 win for Alvernia. 

The win is Alvernia's first time beating Ursinus in a dual match setting. The Golden Wolves fell to Ursinus 34-12 in Alvernia's first season of competition during the 2019-20 season.

Alvernia returns to action on December 3rd for the Petrofes Invitational at Messiah.
