Strong Offensive Performance Lifts Alvernia Over FDU-Florham, 71-37

Reading, Pa. (Nov. 28, 2021)- Alvernia University (3-2) put up 42 points in the second half to storm past FDU-Florham (0-6) in a 71-37 win on Sunday night in non-conference women's basketball action at Alvernia.
 
Despite a slim lead at the end of the first half, the Golden Wolves dominated on both sides of the ball in the second. Alvernia tallied 42 points while allowing just 14 points to Devils.
 
FDU-Florham opened the scoring with a layup in the opening minutes, which was quickly answered by Kayla Williams.
 
Both teams traded baskets over the next four minutes, with Alvernia taking a slim four-point lead.
 
The opening stanza ended with Tyra Robinson missing a three at the buzzer. The Golden Wolves took a three-point lead, 12-9, going into the second quarter.
 
FDU-Florham once again opened the scoring in the second quarter, with Arian Coleman sinking a three to tie the contest. The Devils took the lead a minute later, coming off a layup.
 
Alvernia did not stay down for long, with Taliyah Malone netting a three and putting them back on top by one.
 
Both teams traded baskets over the next five minutes, with neither team able to gain an edge. With 2:17 left in the second quarter, the score was tied, 19-19.
 
Williams once again came up with a huge play, fighting through contact to sink a layup while drawing the foul. This huge effort helped kickstart the Alvernia offense and provide the spark needed for a 10-4 run to close out the half.
 
This run was capped off by a buzzer-beating layup which came off the hands of Kylie Bradford. The Golden Wolves went into the half with the lead, 29-23.
 
Alvernia opened the second half just as fast, with Williams downing a three to extend the lead to nine.
 
The Devils and Golden Wolves fought neck and neck through the first two minutes of the quarter, but Alvernia's offense proved to be too much.
 
Williams netted another layup with 7:11 remaining in the quarter. This layup was the beginning of a 21-0 run in the third quarter, and what would be a 25-0 run going into the final frame.
 
 
This explosion of points was capped off by a buzzer-beating layup from Robinson coming off a steal made at half court by Robinson as time was expiring.
 
Alvernia held FDU-Florham to just four points in the third quarter while tallying 27 points of its own. The Golden Wolves went into the fourth quarter with a dominant, 56-27 lead.
 
The fourth quarter started fast, with the Golden Wolves expanding their lead by four more, with Cathryn Kramer and Williams each knocking down a basket.
 
The Devils ended the 25-0 run with a free throw from Brielle Fedo with 7:38 remaining in the contest.
 
Both teams battled the rest of the way, with Alvernia outscoring the Devils 15-10 in the fourth quarter.
 
The Golden Wolves finished the contest with a score of 71-37, defeating FDU-Florham and securing their third win of the season.
 
Williams had a career night, recording a career-high 23 points to go with seven rebounds and five assists. Malone had a big night as well, dropping 17 points and tallying five steals and three rebounds. Jordan Karmonick also had a solid performance, recording a career-high ten boards, six assists, and two points.
 
Alvernia returns to action this Wednesday at home with its MAC Commonwealth opener against York College at 6:00 PM.
