Reading, Pa. (Dec. 1, 2021)- Alvernia University (3-3, 0-1) fell just short Wednesday night against York College (6-1, 1-0) with the Spartans taking a 70-63 win over Alvernia in the women's basketball MAC Commonwealth season opener at Alvernia.
Cathryn Kramer made Alvernia history Wednesday night, as she became the career block leader in Alvernia Women's Basketball history. Kramer's third block of the night, which came with 5:08 remaining in the third quarter, put her at 101 career blocks. Kramer recorded four blocks, all in the second half, to break the previous record of 100 career blocks held by Karen Kupusnick and set back in 1993. Kramer broke the record in just 37 games.
The Spartans opened the scoring with a three from Alana Bortner. Alvernia quickly answered with a layup from Kramer.
York continued to push the pace, as over the next four minutes, it went on a 12-1 run to take a 15-3 lead.
The Golden Wolves ended the Spartan's run with a layup from
Taliyah Malone. Both teams traded baskets over the next few minutes to close out the opening stanza with the Spartans leading Alvernia, 20-10.
York opened the second quarter with Savannah Wilson netting a three.
Jordan Karmonick quickly answered, knocking down a jumper.
Wilson knocked down another shot for the Spartans a minute later, but Alvernia sophomore
Kayla Williams answered with a layup of her own.
The Golden Wolves continued to apply pressure, with Kramer and Williams recording a basket to cut the lead to nine.
Both teams battled back and forth the rest of the way, with neither team able to gain momentum. The Spartans went into the half with the lead, 37-26.
The Spartans opened the half with a basket in the opening seconds. The Alvernia offense was then sparked with a layup from
Tamia Wessels, which helped give life to a 9-0 Alvernia run.
Despite this strong offensive output, the Spartans rallied and were able to build their lead back up. With the strong offensive push, York was able to close out the quarter with a 54-45 lead.
York knocked down a three to open the fourth quarter, pushing their lead to 12. Williams quickly answered with a layup coming off an assist from Kramer.
The Spartans quickly added to their lead, going on a 5-0 run to push the lead to 15. Despite the deficit, Alvernia's offense responded to the added pressure.
Kramer and Malone both knocked down a pair of baskets, which was quickly followed up by a layup from Williams.
Malone was able to provide an additional boost, knocking down a layup and cutting the deficit to just six with 1:11 left to play.
This offensive barrage did not prove to be enough, however, as York was able to go shot for shot with the Alvernia the rest of the way.
The Spartans defeated Alvernia, with a final score of 70-63.
Kramer capped off her record night with 11 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocks. Williams led the Golden Wolves in scoring, tallying 15 points, along with five rebounds and two blocks. Karmonick also had a solid night, recording nine boards, four points, and a team-high five assists.
The Golden Wolves return to action this Saturday as they take on Stevenson University on the road at Stevenson.
