Fourth Quarter Push Lifts Stevenson Past Alvernia, 66-58

Owings Mills, Md. (Dec. 4, 2021) - Stevenson University (2-4, 1-1) scored 12 unanswered in the final 4:10 to take a 66-58 win over Alvernia University (3-4, 0-2) on Saturday afternoon in MAC Commwealth women's basketball action at Stevenson.

After holding a lead through the first six minutes of the fourth quarter, Alvernia held a 58-54 advantage over the Mustangs with 4:26 left to play. But, the Mustangs would hold Alvernia scoreless for the remainder of the game while coming away with the 66-58 win.

The Golden Wolves opened the scoring with a free throw made by Jordan Karmonick and a layup by Kayla Williams to take an early 3-0 lead.  Alvernia quickly built its lead up to six, 10-4, following a made 3-pointer by Taliyah Malone with 7:57 left in the first quarter.

Alvernia maintained the lead for another five minutes until the Mustangs tied it up at 12-12 after a jumper by Laci Johnson with just under three minutes remaining. After trading baskets, both teams were tied at 18-18 going into the second frame.

The Mustangs scored the opening points of the second quarter to take a 20-18 lead with 8:10 left in the half. The Golden Wolves wasted no time retaking the lead as a quick 6-0 run that was capped by a Tamia Wessels jumper took Alvernia back in front, 26-20, with 3:37 left in the half. 

Much like in the first quarter, the Mustangs worked their way back in and tied it on a made free throw with 40 seconds left in the quarter. A second made free throw put the Mustangs ahead, 31-30, The Mustangs took that lead into the half.

Coming out of the half, the Mustangs quickly extended their lead to 33-30 following a jumper on their first possession. But, Alvernia got back within one on its ensuing possession following a layup from Malone. Alvernia then retook the lead, 34-31, on a jumper from Malone with 8:35 on the clock. 

The Mustangs and Golden Wolves traded the lead over the next five and a half minutes until a jumper from Williams put Alvernia in front 42-41 with 3:01 to play. Alvernia went on a quick run, capped off by a Tyra Robinson jumper, to build its lead up to 50-41. The Mustangs scored the final points of the third quarter to make it 50-43 in favor of Alvernia going into the final quarter. 

The Mustangs scored the opening points of the 4th quarter, a 3-pointer, to get within four, 50-46. 

Alvernia answered right back with a 3-pointer by Malone to go back up seven, 53-46, with 9:04 to play.

The Golden Wolves held on to an ever decreasing lead for the next five minutes until Stevenson got within one, 58-57, off a 3-pointer. After both teams briefly went scoreless, Stevenson took the lead off an Olivia Coleman layup to go up 59-58. The Golden Wolves could not score the rest of the way while Stevenson continued to add to its lead and ultimately take the 66-58 win.

Malone led Alvernia's scoring efforts with 17 points. Williams finished with 12 points and eight rebounds, and Cathryn Kramer led Alvernia with 12 rebounds. 

Alvernia returns to action on Wednesday hosting crosstown rival Albright College at 6 PM.
