Madison, NJ (Nov. 6, 2021) - Alvernia University (0-9, 0-7) was held scoreless in the second half as FDU Florham (6-3, 5-2) was able to come away with a 34-14 win over the Golden Wolves on Saturday afternoon in MAC football action at FDU.
Alvernia trailed just by just one score - 21-14 - at the half, but FDU scored 13 unanswered for the 34-14 win.
The Devils started out fast, taking the opening kickoff all the way down to Alvernia's two yard line. FDU needed just one play, a two-yard rush by Alnazir Blackman, to get on the board. The Devils converted the PAT to go up 7-0 after just 36 seconds of action.
Alvernia wasted no time responding. Kyle Stanton took the ensuing kickoff back 30 yards to put Alvernia in solid field position with the drive starting on its own 42 yard line. After an incomplete pass by Kevin Washington, Alvernia's Malcolm Carey took two rushes for a combined 34 yards to put Alvernia on the FDU 29 yard line. Alvernia kept the ground game going with Carey, Anthony Lazar, and Washington combining for five rushes to take Alvernia down to the FDU seven yard line. The Golden Wolves capped off their drive in the air with Washington finding Saul Nixon in the endzone for an Alvernia touchdown. Nixon's touchdown reception was his first collegiate career catch.
Penalties proved to be costly for Alvernia on FDU's next drive. With the Devils facing a 3rd and 6 on Alvernia's 36, an unsportsmanlike penalty on Alvernia gave the Devils a fresh set of downs. Just two plays later, another unsportsmanlike on Alvernia moved the ball down the field another 15 yards to put the Devils on the Alvernia eight yard line. A defensive pass interference on the next play moved FDU down to Alvernia's two yard line, and one play later the Devils found the endzone on a two-yard completion to Connor Perez.
Both teams were forced to punt away on their next drives.
Alvernia took over on its own 37 yard line, and the opening play of the drive saw Washington connecting with Nick Rosahac for a 28 yard game to take the game into the second quarter. The Golden Wolves continued to work their way down the field and an 11-yard completion from Washington to Nixon put Alvernia in a 1st and goal on the FDU eight yard line. A seven yard rush by Lorenzo Green put Alvernia on the one yard line, but a one yard loss on third down put Alvernia in a fourth and goal situation on the two yard line. The Golden Wolves opted to go for it, but FDU was able to make the stop and take over on its own one yard line.
The Devils worked their way down the field on a 99 yard, seven minute drive that was capped off by a six yard rush by Blackman to put FDU up 21-7 with 3:45 left in the half.
Alvernia's next drive started on its own 28 yard line. Two plays later, Alvernia faced a 3rd and 15 and handed it off to Carey. Carey took it up the FDU sideline and rushed 77 yards into the endzone. The 77 yard breakaway by Carey was the longest rush of his career. Henry Garton converted his second PAT of the game to make it a one score game, 21-14.
Neither team was able to get anything going the rest of the half, as the Devils took the 21-14 lead into the half.
Alvernia received the opening kickoff and began working its way down the field. With Alvernia facing a 1st down on FDU's 11 yard line, Washington's pass attempt was intercepted on the eight yard line by Joseph Randazzo. Randazzo took the interception and returned it all the way down to the Alvernia's 12 yard line before being pushed out of bounds by several Golden Wolves who were able to chase him down. Alvernia's defense was able to make a stand and hold the Devils to a 32 yard field goal as FDU extended its lead to 24-14 with nine minutes left in the third quarter.
Alvernia went three and out on its next drive. As the Golden Wolves went to punt it away a low snap on the punt forced Alvernia punter Adrian Fares to fall on the ball, setting up the Devils with great field position on Alvernia's 21 yard line.
Once again Alvernia's defense was able to keep FDU out of the end zone as the Devils had to settle for another field goal. This time Chris Dimedio found the uprights from 20 yards out to give FDU the 27-14 lead with just under five minutes remaining in the third quarter.
With Alvernia facing a 2nd and 29 on its next drive after being driven back to its side of the field, Washington was able to connect with Joseph Perkins on a 19 yard comeback completion to make it a much more manageable 3rd and 10 on FDU's 32 yard line. But, on the next play, FDU forced a fumble out of the hands of Carey and the Devils were able to recover the ball to take over on its own 35 yard line with just under 30 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
For the third straight drive, Alvernia's defense was able to keep the Devils out of the end zone to force FDU to punt the ball away and keep it a 13 point game with 12:30 remaining in the game.
Alvernia was unable to get anything going on its next drive, and punted the ball away to its own 40 yard line.
On FDU's first play of the next drive, Jyleen Neals forced a fumble that he was able to come up with to give Alvernia the ball back. But, an unsportsmanlike on Alvernia pinned them back on its 19 yard line instead of taking the ball over on its 34 yard line.
Carey took the opening play of the drive 16 yards to give Alvernia a first down on the FDU 35 yard line. But two straight sacks on Louis Sepe, who took over under center, forced Alvernia to punt away on a 4th and 24 situation. A short punt by Alvernia had FDU take over on the Alvernia 43 yard line with just under nine minutes remaining.
This time Alvernia's defense was unable to stop the Devils as FDU marched down the field and capped of a five minute, 57 yard drive with a one yard pass to Perez to put the Devils up 34-14 with just over three minutes to play.
Alvernia was unable to get anything going as the Golden Wolves again punted the ball away.
