Alvernia Survives Late Surge By Wilkes, 25-21

Wilkes, Pa. (Dec. 10, 2021) -  Alvernia University (4-1) held off a late surge by Wilkes University (1-2) to come away with a 25-21 win over the Colonels on Friday night in a men's wrestling dual match at Wilkes.

After Wilkes took a 3-0 lead after the first bout, Alvernia rattled off five straight wins to jump out to a 25-3 lead. Wilkes won the final four bouts, but Wilkes could not overcome the 22 point deficit as Alvernia held on for the 25-21 win.

Wilkes took the 3-0 lead after Austin Fashouer took a 3-0 decision over Alvernia's Keito Shaw in the 125-pound bout, but a 12-0 major decision by Kyle Seibert in the 133-pound bout gave Alvernia the 4-3 lead.

Back-to-back pins by Quinn Tobin and Jason Rezac at 141 and 149, respectively, quickly propelled Alvernia to a 16-3 lead over the Colonels.

Robert Lawlor continued Alvernia's winning streak with a 5-1 decision in the 157-pound bout. What would turn out to be Alvernia's final points of the match came from a crucial pin by Matthew Lackman at 165-pounds  to give Alvernia the 25-3 advantage.

The Colonels started working their way back with John Devito taking an 11-2 major decision over Gavin Hollingsworth to put Wilkes back on the board and make it a 25-7 match.

Wilkes then posted back-to-back pins over Alvernia's Isaac Kassic at 184-pounds and Tonee Ellis at 197-pounds, but the Colonels lost one point on the 197 bout after receiving an unsportsmanlike penalty - putting the match out of reach regardless of the outcome of the heavyweight bout.

Wilkes finished off its late push with a 3-1 decision over Palmer Rodenhaber in the 285-pound bout to finish the match off as Alvernia came away with the 25-21 win.

The Golden Wolves will stay up in Wilkes-Barre tomorrow for a Quad Match at King's. Alvernia will take on the host Monarchs, Pitt-Bradford, and Muhlenberg.
