Golden Wolves Sweep At King's Quad Match

Wilkes, Pa. (Dec. 11, 2021) - Alvernia University (7-1) picked up three wins to sweep the King's College Quad Match on Saturday in wrestling action in Wilkes, Pa.

The Golden Wolves started their day with a 27-21 win over Muhlenberg. Alvernia then dominated Pitt Bradford in a 50-6 match, and the Golden Wolves finished their day off with a 24-18 win against King's. 

Alvernia vs. Muhlenberg
In its opening match of the day, Alvernia faced an early 6-0 deficit to Muhlenberg after Keito Shaw was pinned in the opening bout. Alvernia got on the board in the next bout with Kyle Seibert taking a 6-1 decision at 133-pounds to make it a 6-3 match in favor of Muhlenberg. Quinn Tobin then put Alvernia ahead, 9-6, with a fall in 3:09 over Ricky Caamano in the 133-pound bout. 

Jason Rezac then added to Alvernia's lead with a 14-9 decision at 149-pounds to make it a 12-6 match in favor of Alvernia. But, the Muhls got back within three, 12-9, after Anson Dewar took a 6-4 decision over Ryan Lesko at 157-pounds. 

A 3:43 pin by Matthew Lackman at 165-pounds, and an 18-0 tech fall by Gavin Hollingsworth at 174-pounds quickly surged Alvernia ahead to a 23-9 advantage. Isaac Kassis then added to that advantage with a 9-1 major decision at 184-pounds to put Alvernia out of reach for the Muhls, 27-9.

Alvernia forfeited its final two bouts for the 27-21 final in favor of the Golden Wolves.

Alvernia vs. Pitt-Bradford
In their second match of the day, Alvernia picked up its most lop-sided victory of the afternoon. Robert Philpot, Connor Platt, and Lackman all picked up pins for Alvernia on the match. Ryan Kernan had an 11-9 decision at 157-pounds, and Hollingsworth had a 16-0 tech. fall at 174-pounds.

Seibert, Rezac, Kassis, and Rodenhaber each picked up a win by forfeit for Alvernia.

Alvernia vs. King's
Alvernia closed out its afternoon with a closely contested match with the Monarchs. Shaw put Alvernia on the board, 5-0, in the first bout of the match with a 17-1 tech. fall. King's wasted no time taking the lead after Gus Petruske pinned Alvernia's Seibert in 1:58 to put the Monarchs in front, 6-5. 

The back-and-forth continued when Tobin took an 11-3 major decision at 141-pounds to put Alvernia back in front, 9-6. Rezac added to Alvernia's lead, 12-6, with a 13-6 decision at 149-pounds. 

King's got three back, 12-9, with a 3-1 decision at 157-pounds, but Lackman then picked up his third pin of the afternoon - this one in 1:48 - to put Alvernia up by nine, 18-9. 

The Monarchs then got back within six, 18-12, after Kade Kravits picked up a narrow 2-0 decision over Hollingsworth. But, Kassis extended Alvernia's lead back up to nine, 21-12, in the 184-pound bout with a 3-0 decision over William Grace. 

Alvernia had to take a forfeit at 197-pounds, making it a three point match, 21-18, with one bout to go. 

Alvernia's Rodenhaber was able to come away with the crucial 3-0 decision to seal Alvernia's Saturday sweep with a 24-18 match win.
