Huntingdon, Pa. (Dec. 18, 2021)- Alvernia University (4-5) recorded a season-high 73 points en route to a ten-point win on the road over Juniata College (4-5) in non-conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Wolves kicked off the scoring early, with
Kayla Williams netting a layup. Alvernia continued to push the pace as
Tamia Wessels knocked down a layup of her own.
The Eagles tallied their first basket with 6:30 left in the opening stanza, as Grace Long sunk the first three-pointer of the contest. Juniata then knocked down a layup to take a slim, one-point lead.
The Golden Wolves did not wait long to respond, as a jumper from Janelle Robinson gave them back the lead. This helped Alvernia's offense find its rhythm, going on a 10-0 run which was capped off by Wessels.
The Golden Wolves closed out the opening stanza with a nine-point lead, 14-5.
The second quarter started with Juniata netting a basket to cut the deficit to seven. Despite this, the Golden Wolves' offense continued to click, as
Taliyah Malone helped lead a 6-0 run to give Alvernia a 13 point lead.
Both teams traded baskets over the next two minutes, with Juniata cutting the deficit to seven.
Despite this effort, the Golden Wolves' offense continued to charge ahead as they proceeded to go on another huge run.
Tyra Robinson led the offense on a 16-6 run to close out the half.
The Golden Wolves ended their strong first half with a 17 point lead, 38-21.
The Eagles' offense came to life in the second half, going on a 10-1 run to cut the Golden Wolves' lead to eight with 5:41 left in the third quarter.
Juniata continued to apply pressure, as a jump shot from Averie Hess cut the deficit to just four.
Despite this offensive explosion from the Eagles, the Golden Wolves were able to push back. Alvernia was able to push back and regain control, extending the lead back up to ten.
The Golden Wolves closed out the third quarter with a layup from Williams. Alvernia went into the fourth quarter with a 52-42 lead.
The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth battle. The Golden Wolves started the quarter strong, with Kathryn Kramer knocking down a layup that helped push the Alvernia lead to 14.
With 5:05 left in the contest, Juniata was able to cut the deficit to 12. This helped spark a run that narrowed the Golden Wolves' lead to just seven with 2:17 left to play.
Despite the Eagles' best efforts, the Alvernia offense proved to be too much for them. With both teams trading baskets to close out the game, Juniata was never able to get back on top.
The Golden Wolves knocked off the Eagles by ten points, securing a 73-63 win.
Jordan Karmonick led all scorers, recording a career-high 21 points to go along with two assists and one rebound. Malone also made an impact, tallying ten points as well as seven boards and four assists. Williams had a solid performance, recording nine points, three rebounds, and two assists.
The Golden Wolves return to action Monday at Alvernia to take on Penn State Brandywine.
