Golden Wolves Run Past Lions, 74-34

Reading, Pa. (Dec. 20, 2021) - Alvernia University (5-5) held Penn State Brandywine (6-8) to just 22.8% shooting from the floor as Alvernia's offensive overpowered the Lions to a 74-34 win in non-conference women's basketball action at Alvernia on Monday night.

Alvernia's defense was dominant in the performance; out-rebounding the Lions by 11 and forcing 25 turnovers. The Golden Wolves went on to score 25 points off of PSU turnovers.

The Lions scored the opening four points of the contest to hold a 4-0 lead after two minutes of action. A layup from Jordan Karmonick and a 3-pointer by Tamia Wessels put the Golden Wolves up, 5-4, 90 seconds later.

The Lions and Golden Wolves tied it up twice over the next four minutes, but a layup by Karmonick with 1:18 to go in the first quarter put Alvernia up 10-8. The Golden Wolves did not give up the lead the rest of the way.

Entering the second quarter with a slim 11-10 lead, Alvernia built its lead up to five following a Wessels layup after just under a minute of action.

The Lions cut the lead back to one, 15-14, after a layup and two converted free throws, but a 3-pointer by Chenoa Bernhardt off the bench put the Golden Wolves up by four with 6:19 to go in the second quarter.

The Bernhardt 3-pointer sparked an 11-0 run by Alvernia over the next three minutes that was capped off by a Karmonick three to make it 26-14 with 3:44 left in the half

A made layup by the Lions ended their scoring drought to make it 26-16 with 2:06 left in the half, but Alvernia kept its foot on the gas for the final 120 seconds of the quarter as Alvernia took a 34-18 lead into the half.

Alvernia's defense continued to press the Lions coming out of the break, keeping them off the board for nearly five minutes. The Alvernia offense took advantage as a Taliyah Malone layup with 5:47 left in the 3rd quarter gave Alvernia its largest lead thus far, 40-18.

The Lions scored six quick points to make it a 16 point game, 40-24, with just under four minutes left in the third. But, the Golden Wolves held the Lions to just two points the rest of the quarter while building up their lead to 30 points, 54-24, off a layup by Jannelle Robinson. Alvernia took a 54-26 lead into the final quarter.

Alvernia continued to push the score in the final ten minutes, maintaining at least a 30 point lead much of the quarter. Two free throws by Taylor Meagher with 3:31 put Alvernia up by 40, 72-32.

Alvernia's final points of the game came off of a set of Tyra Robinson free throws to make it a 74-32 final.

Tyra Robinson, coming off the bench, led all scorers with a career-high 14 points. She also added five rebounds and a team-high six assists. Both Malone and Karmonick also reached double-digits, with Malone tallying 12 and Karmonick adding 11. Both also finished with six rebounds, and Malone had five assists and Karmonick finished with six. Cathryn Kramer finished with nine rebounds and six blocks.

Alvernia also had a solid team performance from the line, going 17-for-19.

The Golden Wolves are off for the holiday and will return to action on the 30th of December to host Ursinus in a non-conference matchup.
