Reading, Pa. (March 13, 2021) - Alvernia University (5-2, 5-2) swept Eastern University (1-4, 1-4) in a Saturday MAC Volleyball doubleheader at Alvernia's Jack McCloskey Court. The Golden Wolves took both matches in straight sets, 3-0.

In the first set during match one of the day, Alvernia and Eastern traded the lead the majority of the set. Neither team was able to build much of a lead as the set came down to the final points. A kill by Brian Rea gave Alvernia a 24-22 lead, but Eastern responded with a kill of its own to make it 24-23. Alvernia then sealed the set win on a kill by Tyler Anderson. 

Caleb Whitehead led Alvernia in the first match with ten kills. Ethyn Burczyk finished with 38 assists and Josh Stewart finished with 11 digs and three blocks.

In set two of the match, Alvernia jumped out to an early 4-1 lead, capped off by a block by Victor de Avila and Josh Stewart, and never gave up the lead the rest of the set. Alvernia finished off the set with back-to-back kills from de Avila and Caleb Whitehead to take the set 25-17.

The Golden Wolves led 5-1 early in the third set and went on to hold a 9-4 lead after a 4-0 run that was capped off by a kill from Aaron Kuhlman. But, Eastern would bounce back and use a 5-0 run later on in the set to take a 17-16 lead.  With the set tied at 22-22, Alvernia scored back-to-back points on a kill by Kuhlman and a setting error by the Eagles to make it match point. After a set error by Alvernia, the Golden Wolves finished off the set and the match on a kill by Kuhlman. 

In set one of match two, Alvernia went on a 9-1 run behind the serves of Logan McGinley and de Avila to go up 11-3. The Golden Wolves kept their foot on the gas the rest of the match and finished off the set on a kill by McGinley to take the 25-17 set win.

In set two of the match, the Golden Wolves fell behind 6-3 early, but scored five straight to take the lead at 8-6. The Eagles tied it up at 9-9 on a kill by Foster Lobb. Alvernia regained the lead on a block by Rea and McGinley and didn't give it up the rest of the way. The Golden Wolves sealed the set 25-21 set win on a kill by McGinley.

In what would be the final set of the day, Alvernia opened the set on a 9-2 run that was capped by a kill by de Avila to put Alvernia up early. The Eagles would get within three on two occasions, but never any closer. A kill by Caleb Whitehead secured the 25-19 set win and the 3-0 match win.

Whitehead again led Alvernia in match two with 14 kills. McGinley finished with 12 digs and Burczyk finished with 36 assists. 

Alvernia continues it MAC season on Wednesday with a home match against Arcadia.
