Baseball Splits Doubleheader At Messiah

Grantham, Pa. (March 20, 2021) - Alvernia University (5-3, 1-1) split the Saturday doubleheader with Messiah University (2-5, 1-5) on Saturday in Alvernia's first MAC Commonwealth series of the 2021 season.

After the Falcons and Golden Wolves played to a 3-3 tie in what was the scheduled seven inning game of the series, Alvernia took the 4-3 in what would become the nine inning game. In game two, Messiah earned the split with a 5-2 win over Alvernia in seven innings.

In game one of the afternoon, Alvernia's Billy Coleman opened the scoring with a triple in the top of the second to drive in Brandon Smith and put the Golden Wolves up 1-0.

The Falcons responded in their half of the second, taking a 2-1 lead off an RBI single to center and an RBI single through the right gap.

Messiah extended its lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth, driving in a run on an RBI double to left field.

Alvernia worked to tie it up in the top of the seventh, and Mike Cirilli led off the inning with a single to first. Nick Nutile was then hit by a pitch and Thomas Faggioni walked to load the bases in the next two at bats. With one out, Grant Hackett singled down the left field line to bring in Cirilli and Nutile to tie the game at 3-3.

Both teams went scoreless in the eighth, but Alvernia was able to break the tie in the top of the ninth when Billy Coleman singled up the middle to drive in Evan Williams.

The Falcons put a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth, but were unable to convert as Alvernia came away with the 4-3 win.

Cirilli led Alvernia with three hits and a run, and Coleman finished with two hits and two RBIs.

Cirilli also picked up the win on the mound after coming in for three innings of relief work and allowing just one hit.

In game two of the afternoon, Messiah jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second after a field error by Alvernia allowed a Falcon to score. Messiah would then add three in its half of the the third to extend its lead to 4-0. The Falcons then added one more on a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth to go up 5-0.

Nutile drove in Cirilli in the top of the sixth on a single to left to put Alvernia on the board, and the Golden Wolves added another run in the top of the seventh on a Jason Kelly to left center to bring in Kyler Newton. The Golden Wolves were then retired on a ground out and fly out to end any threat and give Messiah the 5-2 victory.

Nutile, Smith, Newton, and Kelly recorded Alvenria's only hits of game two.
Brian Kane got the start and gave up five hits over five innings of work in the loss.

The two teams meet again tomorrow at Alvernia to close out the conference series.
