Alvernia Takes Saturday Sweep Of Hood

Reading, Pa. (March 20, 2021) - Alvernia Softball (5-1, 5-1) opened its series with Hood College (1-5, 1-5) with a Saturday doubleheader sweep in MAC Commonwealth softball action at Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves took game one 8-0 in five innings and game two 6-3.

In game one of the series, Alvernia got off to a fast start with a five run first inning. Sarah Reinert led off the inning with a single through the right side and would end up scoring Alvernia's first run of the afternoon by stealing home. Riley Shields then singled up the middle to drive in Maggie Loomis, and Kerstin Koenig singled to the left gap to bring in Alyssa Acker. Nicole August drove in the final two runs of the inning on a single up the middle to score Paige Paciolla and Acker - giving Alvernia the early 5-0 lead.

Alvernia tacked on a run in the bottom of the second, with Shields scoring Reinert on a a sac fly to right.

Ana Fouracre drove in Alvernia's final runs of game one with a two-run single in the bottom of the third to bring in Koenig and Tara Tumasz.

Reinert led Alvernia's offense with a hit, two runs, and four stolen bases in game one. Shields, August, and Fouracre each drove in two runs.

Shields was once again lights out in the circle, striking out 11 of the 17 batters she faced. She allowed just one hit and one walk.

In game two of the afternoon, Reinert led off the Golden Wolves with a single to right and would come around to score Alvernia's first run of the game on a single by Shields down the right field line.

The Golden Wolves defense fended off a bases loaded threat by the Blazers in the top of the second to stay up 1-0.

Both teams would go scoreless over the next three innings before Alvernia added three to its lead in the bottom of the fifth. Reinert got on base in the lead off position after being hit by a pitch, and Shields would again drive her in on a single to right to put Alvernia up 2-0. Carlen Lazar, pinch running for Koenig, then scored for the Golden Wolves on a first and third situation that had the Blazers fall for getting the out at second. Alernia's final run of the inning came on a Tara Tumasz single up the middle to bring in Alyssa Acker and put Alvernia up 4-0.

The Golden Wolves defense struggled to get out of the top of the sixth, with the Blazers scoring three runs to bring it within one at 4-3 with two outs. Emma Kropkowski, pitching in relief for Ally Decker, ended the bases loaded threat with a strikeout.

Alvernia responded in its half of the sixth, with Kropkowski scoring on a sacrifice hit by Reinert, and Fouracre scoring on a single to center by Koenig to put Alvernia back up by three, 6-3.

Alvernia retired the Blazers in order in the top of the seventh to come away with the 6-3 victory.

Shields led Alvernia's offense in game two with two hits and two RBIs.

In the circle, Decker picked up the win with eight strikeouts over five and two thirds. Kropkowski finished with three strikeouts over one and a third.

Alvernia heads down to Hood on Sunday to finish out its MAC Commonwealth series with the Blazers.
