Offense Dominates To Complete Series Sweep Of Hood

Frederick, Md. (March 21, 2021) - Alvernia University's (7-1, 7-1) offense came alive combining for 23 runs over two six-inning wins against Hood College (1-7, 0-4) on Sunday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth softball action at Hood.

Alvernia took game one 12-1 in six innings and followed that with an 11-1 win in six innings in game two.

After being held hitless through the first three innings of game one, Alvernia's offense came alive in the top of the fourth.

With Sarah Reinert on third and Maggie Loomis on second, Riley Shields doubled down the left field line to score Reinert and put Alvernia up 1-0. Loomis was then driven home on a single up the middle by Alyssa Acker to put Alvernia up 2-0. The Golden Wolves then picked up two more runs on back-to-back sac flies by Kersitn Koenig and Paige Paciolla to put Alvernia up 4-0.

Alvernia added another four runs in the top of the fifth to double its lead to 8-0. With Carlen Lazar and Megan Poley on pinch running for Nicole August and Ana Fouracre, respectively, Loomis hit a bases clearing triple to drive in Lazar and Poley. Shields then lined out to left field to score Loomis. Alvernia's final run of the inning came from Alyssa Acker, who rounded the bases on a series of errors by Hood to put Alvernia up 8-0.

Hood got one back in the bottom of the fifth on a bases loaded walk, but Alvernia kept its foot on the gas in the top of the sixth - scoring four runs for the third straight inning.

Alvernia started off the sixth with a double from Hope Robinson, who then came in to score on the following at-bat when August hit a double of her own. Alvernia's next two runs game on a bases loaded walk, followed by a wild pitch. Alvernia's final run of the game then came on a single from Devan Hudson to score Reinert and give Alvernia the 12-1 win.

Shields got a four inning start for Alvernia in the circle, and then returned for one and two thirds innings of relief work. Shields did not allow a hit and struck out six.

Loomis led Alvernia's offense with two hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored.

Alvernia's offensive momentum carried into game two of the day, with Acker getting things started for the Golden Wolves with a two run homer to center field to put Alvernia up 2-0 early.

Alvernia added two more in the top of the second to go up 4-0. Reinert doubled to right center to score Alison Kirschner, who reached on a walk to lead off the inning. Koenig then singled on the following at bat to bring in Reinert.

Hood got one back in the bottom of the second to cut Alvernia's lead to 4-1, but the Blazers wouldn't score the rest of the way.

After Alvernia failed to string together hits over the next three innings, the Golden Wolves offense exploded with seven runs in the top of the sixth.

Alvernia's first two runs of the inning came after Ally Decker laid down a bunt that resulted in multiple errors by the Blazers and two runs coming in for Alvernia. Reinert then doubled to center to drive in Emily Sano, and Koenig single to right center to bring in Reinert. Acker then doubled to center to bring in Shields and Koenig, and Tara Tumasz capped off the inning with a single to left to bring in Acker.

Alvernia then forced three flyouts in the bottom of the sixth to come away with the 11-1 win.

Ally Decker picked up the game two win for Alvernia in the circle, striking out two and allowing just two hits.

Acker led Alvernia's offense with four RBIs, two hits, and two runs.

Alvernia continues its MAC Commonwealth schedule on Saturday when it opens its series with Lebanon Valley with a road doubleheader.
