Baseball Swept By Spartans

Reading, Pa. (March 27, 2021) - Alvernia University (7-6-1, 3-4-1) was swept by York College (12-2, 10-2) on Saturday afternoon in a MAC Commonwealth baseball doubleheader at Alvernia.

York put up three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 4-3 win in game one, and the Spartans followed that with a 5-3 win in game two.

In game one of the afternoon, the Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a double down the left field line to drive in the leadoff batter.

In the bottom of the fourth, Thomas Faggioni led off the inning by striking out, but was able to reach first on a wild pitch. In the next at bat, Brandon Smith homered to left field to put Alvernia up 2-1.

Alvernia extended its lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth on a solo shot to left by Billy Dougar to lead off the inning.

After retiring the first two batters of the top of the seventh, York began to rally. The Spartans put a runner on with a single to right, and made it a one run game on the following at bat with a triple to left center. York then tied it up with an RBI single to right.  The Spartans then took the 4-3 lead on an RBI single.

The Golden Wolves threatened in its half of the seventh, with Joe Ginder sitting on third with two outs. But, the Spartans ended Alvernia's threat by forcing an infield ground out.

Billy Coleman and Ginder each went two-for-three at the plate for Alvernia, and Smith finished with two RBIs.

Jake Reese went the distance for Alvernia on the mound, giving up eight hits and striking out five.

In game two, York again took an early 1-0 lead after the top of the first.

The Spartans extended their lead to 2-0 in the top of the third with a single up the middle.

Alvernia responded in the bottom of the third with Mike Cirilli and Thomas Faggioni driving in runs with RBIs singles.

The Spartans then retook the lead in their half of the fifth on a double to right and extended their lead in the top of the sixth to 5-2 when two runs scored on an error by Alvernia.

Alvernia got one back in the bottom of the seventh on a Lucas Floyd sacrifice fly to right to score Mike Ramundo and cut York's lead to 5-3.

The Golden Wolves would not be able to get another run across the plate as York took the 5-3 win.

Both Dougar and Newton finished with two hits to lead Alvernia's offense.

Alvernia returns to action on Friday with a doubleheader at Widener.
