Baseball Splits Friday Double With Widener

Chester, Pa. (April 2, 2021) - Alvernia University (8-7-1, 4-5-1) split a Friday MAC Commonwealth doubleheader with Widener University (7-5, 4-4), with the Golden Wolves taking game one 3-1 and falling in game two 14-3.

In game one of the afternoon, Thomas Faggioni put Alvernia on the board in the top of the first with an infield single to score Billy Dougar. 

The Pride evened it up at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single to the right gap.

The Golden Wolves retook the lead in the top of the seventh on a two-run home run to left field by Jason Kelly. 

The Pride had the tying run at the plate, but Mike Cirilli, pitching in relief, struck out the final two batters of the game.

Shane Ostrowsky picked up the win for Alvernia, striking out two and allowing four hits. Cirilli picked up the save in one inning of relief, striking out three.

In game two of the afternoon, Brandon Smith put Alvernia on the board in the top of the first with sac fly to score Cirlli.

The Pride erupted in the bottom of the second with a seven run inning on six hits to jump out toa 7-1 lead.

Alvernia got one back on an RBI single by Faggioni in the top of the third, but Widener answered with a run in the bottom of the third.

What would be Alvernia's final run of the game came on an RBI single to left field by Nick Nutile to score Cirilli.

Widener would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 10-3, and scored four more over the final four innings to take the 14-3 win.

Cirilli led Alvernia's offense with two hits and two runs scored. Nutile also finished with two hits.

Alvernia finishes its series with Widener tomorrow at Angelica Park. First pitch is set for noon.
