Reading, Pa. (April 3, 2021) - Alvernia University (9-8-1, 5-6-1) split its Saturday doubleheader with Widener University (8-6, 5-5) with a 3-2 win over the Pride in game one and a 7-0 loss in game two in MAC Commonwealth baseball action at Alvernia.

The Pride struck first in the top of the first with a bases loaded walk to go up 1-0. 

Alvernia responded in its half of the first with a sacrifice fly by Mike Cirilli to score Thomas Faggioni - who led off the inning with a double to left center. 

The Pride took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third on a field error by the Alvernia.

Alvenia tied it at 2-2 on a Billy Coleman double to score Billy Dougar in the bottom of the fifth. Later that inning, the Golden Wolves took the 3-2 lead on a single by Kyler Newton to score Dougar.

Widener had the game tying run on second in the top of the sixth, but were unable to convert. Alvernia retired the Pride in order in the top of the seventh to secure the 3-2 win.

Coleman led Alvernia with two hits and an RBI in game one.

On the mound, Jake Reese pitched six innings. He struck out eight and allowed just five hits and two runs. Cirilli picked up the save with a hitless one inning performance.

In game two of the afternoon, the Pride jumped out to an early 3-0 on an RBI single followed by a two-run homer in the top of the first.

The Pride tacked on four more runs in the top of the seventh. They held Alvernia scoreless and to just five hits on the game.

Alvernia returns to action on Wednesday, hosting Hood College in a makeup doubleheader on Wedneday.
