Reading, Pa. (April 7, 2021) - Alvernia University (11-8-1, 7-6-1) held Hood College (4-10, 2-6) scoreless in 8-0 and 9-0 wins for the Golden Wolves in a doubleheader sweep of the Blazers on Wednesday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth baseball action at Alvernia. 

In game one of the afternoon, Alvernia used a three-run third inning to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Billy Coleman drove in a run on the inning, and Nick Nutile added the final two. 

Mike Ramundo put Alvernia up 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly to score Jason Kelly.

The Golden Wolves then tacked on four more in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 8-0. Grant Hackett drove in Mike Cirilli and Justin Ayala for the first two runs of the inning, and Hackett then came around to score later in the inning on an error by the Blazers. Mike Farinaccio drove in Kelly for the final run of the inning on a double to left center. 

The Blazers wouldn't get a runner past second the rest of the way as Alvernia took the 8-0 game one win.

Shane Ostrwosky picked up the win on the mound with a complete game shutout. He struck out five and allowed just four hits.

Kelly and Ayala led Alvernia with two hits and two runs each. 

In game two of the afternoon, Alvernia again used a big third inning to jump out to an early lead. Alvernia plated four on the inning, with Ayala and Cirilli driving in the first two runs of the inning. Ramundo then hit an RBI double to drive in two and extend Alvernia's lead to 4-0.

Coleman then drove in a run on a well executed squeeze to score Billy Dougar in the bottom of the fourth.

Ramundo drove in Alvernia's sixth run of the afternoon on an infield sacrifice hit to score Kyler Newtown. 

Alvernia went up 7-0 in the bottom of the sixth when Newton was hit by a pitch with bases loaded. The Golden Wolves extended their lead to 8-0 later in the inning on a sac fly to left by Kelly to score Coleman. 

Alvernia's final run of the game came in the bottom of the seventh when Nick Nutile scored on a wild pitch by the Blazers.

Michael Simmerman picked up his first win of the season after striking out for and giving up just five hits over seven innings of work.

Dougar led Alvernia with three hits and three runs in game two.

Alvernia has a bye this weekend and will close out its series with the Blazers on Wednesday at Hood.
