Baseball Splits With Eastern

Saint David's, Pa. (April 10, 2021) - Alvernia University (12-9-1, 7-6-1) split a Saturday doubleheader with Eastern University (2-10, 1-5) taking game one 8-3 and falling in game two 13-5 in non-conference baseball action at Eastern.

In game one of the afternoon, Alvernia's Kyler Newton put the Golden Wolves on the board with a two-run home run in the top of the first.

Alvernia tacked one on in the top of the fourth with Brandon Smith scoring to put Alvernia up 3-0.

The Eagles got a run back in their half of the fourth to bring it to 3-1.

Alvernia extended its lead to 5-1 in the top of the fifth with Justin Ayala and Mike Cirilli coming around to score.

Eastern kept it within two though after scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Alvernia extended its lead to 8-3 in the top of the sixth with Billy Dougar driving in Nick Nutile and Brandon Smith. Ayala then drove in Dougar to score Alvernia's final run of the game.

Ayala led Alvernia going 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.

Jake Reese picked up the win four strikes in four and two thirds innings. Michael Simmerman struck out four in two and a third to earn the save.

In game two of the afternoon, the Eagles and Golden Wolves were locked at 3-3 after six innings before Eastern blew the game open with a ten run seventh.

The Eagles scored their ten runs on just three hits to jump out to a 13-3 lead.

Alvernia got two back on a bases loaded walk and then a wild pitch to cut it to 13-5, but would not get any closer as Eastern took the 13-5 win.

Thomas Faggioni and Mike Ramundo each went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Alvernia's offense in game two.

The Golden Wolves return to action on Saturday hosting Stevenson University.
