Frederick, Pa. (April 15, 2021) - Alvernia University (13-10-1, 8-7-1) split a Thursday doubleheader with Hood College (4-16, 3-11) with a 2-0 loss in game one and a 7-2 win in game two in MAC Commonwealth baseball action at Frederick Community College in Maryland.

In game one of the afternoon, Hood took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly, and made it 2-0 in the bottom of the third on a single to the outfield.

Alvernia's closest opportunity to score came in the top of the sixth when Mike Cirilli was able to make it to third on an error. But, the Blazers forced Alvernia to ground into a double play to end the Golden Wolves threat. 

Shane Ostrowsky struck out two in the loss.

Alvernia wasted no time getting to work in game two. The Golden Wolves took a 4-0 lead in the top of the 1st, with all four runs being scored with two outs. After Nick Nutile reached on a single up the middle, Kyler Newton hit a two-run homer to center to put Alvernia up 2-0. Mike Ramundo then singled to right and then scored on a Jason Kelly double to the left gap. Thomas Faggioni then drove in the final run of the inning on a double to center to score Kelly.

Alvernia then made it 5-0 in the top of the second on an RBI by Billy Dougar to score Joe Ginder. 

Alvernia expanded its lead to 6-0 in the top of fourth on another RBI by Dougar, this time to score Faggioni.

Hood got one back in the bottom of the fourth to make it 6-1.

The Blazers then cut it to a four run game on an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.

Alvernia pushed it back to a five run lead in the top of the eight when Ramundo scored on a passed ball.

The Blazers would not get a runner past first the rest of the way as Alvernia took the 7-2 win.

Ramundo led Alvernia with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate and two runs scored.

Michael Simmerman picked up the win at the plate, striking out two.

Alvernia off this weekend and will close out its conference schedule on April 24th and 25th with a four-game series against Albright. This season, eight teams make the MAC Commonwealth quarterfinals. The four highest seeded teams will host the first two games of a best-of-three series beginning on May 1st. Teams will be seeded based on their conference-only win percentages. Alvernia currently sits as the fourth seed.
