Offense Explodes In Doubleheader Sweep of Albright

Alvernia Combines for 43 runs over two games

Reading, Pa. (April 23, 2021) - Alvernia University's (15-10-1, 10-7-1) combined for 43 runs on 33 hits in an offensive clinic during a doubleheader sweep of Albright College (2-14, 2-12) on Friday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth action at Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves took a 7-inning game one 23-3 and took the 9-inning game two, 20-5.

In game one of the afternoon, the Lions held an early 2-0 lead after a two-run top of the 2nd.

Alvernia answered with a seven run bottom of the second to take a 7-2 lead, and never looked back from that point. The second inning was highlighted by a two-run double to left field by Justin Ayala, and then back-to-back RBI triples by Kyler Newton and Mike Ramundo later in the inning. The Golden Wolves would score seven runs on four hits in the bottom of the second.

In the bottom of the third, Alvernia would extend its lead to 12-2 after plating five runs on five hits. Three of those runs would be scored on Newton's second triple of the game, this time a bases clearing shot to center field to score three.

After Albright got one run back in the top of the 4th, Alvernia would put up its biggest inning in the bottom of the 4th with 11 runs on five hits to go up 23-3. Alvernia's first four runs of the inning would come on a Billy Dougar grand slam. Later in the inning, Chrstian McElroy drove in two runs on a double, and TJ McNeeley drove in three runs on a double to left field.

Alvernia wouldn't give up a run the rest of the way as the Golden Wolves took the 23-3 win. 

On the mound, Shane Ostrowsky picked up the win with six inning, three strikeout performance.

Offensively, Alvernia was led by Kyler Newton who finished with two hits, three runs, and four RBIs. Ayala went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and an RBI.

Game two took also saw Alvernia put on a show at the plate, downing the Lions 20-5.

Jason Kelly got things started for Alvernia in the bottom of the 2nd with a sacrifice fly to score Ramundo, but the Lions tied it up in the top of the 3rd.

Alvenria then extended its lead in the bottom of the 3rd with Nick Nutile driving in Cirilli on a single to right, and then Faggioni walked with the bases loaded later in the inning to give Alvernia the 3-1 lead.

The Golden Wolves had their first big inning of game two in the bottom of the 4th with five runs on five hits to go up 8-1. Cirilli, Newton, Ramundo, and Kelly each finished with an RBI on the inning.

After Nutile added one run to Alvernia lead in the bottom of the 5th on a sac fly, the Golden Wolves then added eight runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth to go up 17-1. Alvernia scored three runs on a bases loaded hit by pitch, followed by back-to-back bases loaded walks. Faggioni capped off the inning with a bases-loaded triple to the right gap to put Alvernia up 17-1.

Ayala and Travis Holonics each drove in a run on RBI singles in the bottom of the seventh to go up 19-1.

The Lions got two back in the top of the eight on a two-run homer, but Alvernia would score its final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth on a bases loaded walk to go gup 20-1.

Abright would plate four in the top of the ninth, but Alvernia would take the 20-5 win.

Michael Simmerman picked up the win in a seven-inning, eight strikeout performance.

Ayala again finished with three hits, and Faggioni finished with four RGIs. 

Alvernia closes out its regular season tomorrow with a a double at Albright.
