Softball Wins 10th Straight With Sweep Over Lebanon Valley

Reading, Pa. (March 29, 2021) - Alvernia University (11-1, 11-1) swept Lebanon Valley College (3-8, 3-8) to complete the series sweep and extend its win streak to ten straight games on Monday in MAC Commonwealth softball action.

The Golden Wolves took game one of the afternoon 4-1, and then took the 8-0 six inning shutout in game two.

In game one of the afternoon, Kerstin Koenig got the Golden Wolves going in the bottom of the first with a single to right to drive in Sarah Reinert and Maggie Loomis and put Alvernia up 2-0.

The Dutchmen got one back in the top of the second on a bases loaded walk.

The Golden Wolves added two runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 4-1. Alvernia scored its first of the inning on a sacrifice hit by Devan Hudson to score Sara Campbell. Koenig then came around to score on a wild pitch to put Alvernia up 4-1.

The Dutchmen would not get a base runner in their half of the seventh as Alvernia took the 4-1 win.

Koenig led Alvernia with two hits and two RBIs.

Ally Decker picked up the win in the circle for Alvernia, striking out three and giving up three hits.

In game two of the afternoon, Alvernia got out of an early jam in the bottom of the first with Dutchmen on second and third when Riley Shields struck out the final two batters of the inning to prevent a run from scoring.

The Golden Wolves offense put up its first run of the game on an Analise Fouracre single to center to score Paige Paciolla.

Alvernia extended its lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the third on a Paciolla double to center to score Shields from first.

Alvernia's offense exploded in the bottom of the fourth. The Golden Wolves batted around and scored five runs on the inning to go up 7-0. Campbell started off the inning with a single up the middle and Fouracre reached on a throwing error by Lebanon Valley in the next at-bat. Reinert drove in the first run of the inning in Campbell on a bullet of a hit that rode the right field line. In the following at bat, Koenig drove in Fouracre to put Alvernia up 4-0. Shields kept the scoring going for Alvernia after hitting a single to left to score Reinert. Alyssa Acker then capped off the inning for Alvernia with a double down the right field line to score Carlen Lazar and Koenig.

After stranding a runner in the bottom of the fifth, Alvernia was able to convert the 8-run rule in the bottom of the sixth. With the bases loaded, Campbell hit a hard grounder back to the pitcher, who threw out Acker running home. The catcher then tried to make a play on Campbell running to first, but she overthrew the first baseman, allowing Paciolla to run home to make it 8-0 and end the game.

Shields led Alvernia's offense with a 3-for-4 performance and an RBI at the plate. She also picked up her sixth win of the season in the circle, giving up just one hit and one walk while striking out six.

Alvernia continues its MAC Commonwealth schedule on Thursday with the opening two games of its series against Eastern University.
