Women's Lacrosse Opens 2021 Season With Impressive 19-5 Win Over Delaware Valley

Doylestown, Pa. (March 6, 2021) - Alvernia University Women's Lacrosse (1-0) opened their 2021 campaign with a 19-5 win over Delaware Valley College (0-1) in non-conference action at Delaware Valley on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Wolves opened the game with a fast start, scoring six goals in just over three minutes to jump out to a 6-0 lead. 

The Aggies called a timeout and scored a goal coming out of the break to get on the board.

Alvernia's Gianna Taffo responded with her second goal of the game to keep Alvernia up by six, 7-1, with 24 minutes remaining in the half.

Delaware Valley scored the next two goals to cut Alvernia's lead down to five, 7-3, with 20 minutes remaining. But, Alvernia held Delaware Valley scoreless the rest of the half while scoring seven goals of their own to hold a comfortable 14-3 lead going into the break.

With the clock running, Alvernia scored the first five goals of the second half to extend its lead to 19-3 with 10:40 remaining.

The Golden Wolves wouldn't score again, as Delaware Valley would net the final two goals of the game.

Eight Golden Wolves recorded a goal for Alvernia, with Taffo leading the way with five goals. Erika Whitmoyer finished with four goals and two assists. Natalie Frantz added three goals, and first-year Haleigh Lackner finished with two goals and two assists. Lackner also finished with a team-high six ground balls and four caused turnovers. Hannah Chadwick led with eight draw controls and also added a goal and an assist to her stat line. 

Kirsten Lake picked up the win, playing 30 minutes and making four saves in net. Kasey Fox took over responsibilities in the second half, making one save.

Alvernia returns to the field on Saturday when the Golden Wolves host Stevens University at 4:00 PM. It will be the first time the teams have met since 2003.
