Offense Dominates In Sweep of York

Reading, Pa. (April 17, 2021) - Alvernia Softball (15-5) combined for 17 runs over the doubleheader to sweep York College (9-7) in a Saturday non-conference doubleheader at Alvernia.

Alvernia took game one 6-1, and then overcame a six run early deficit in game two to win 11-8.

In game one of the afternoon got things started with a three run bottom of the 1st. Paige Paciolla drove in Maggie Loomis and Sarah Reinert on a double to left field. Kerstin Koenig then singled up the middle to drive in Paciolla and put Alvernia up 3-0.

York got one back in the top of the second on an RBI double to center to score what would be their only run of the game.

Alyssa Acker then hit a solo homer to left field in the bottom of the fifth to put Alvernia up 4-1.

The Golden Wolves tacked on two more in the bottom of the sixth on a single to right by Analise Fouracre to score Sara Campbell, and Reinert drove in Hope Robinson to cap off the 6-1 win.

Kerstin Koenig went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.

Ally Decker picked up the win in the circle with eight strikeouts and allowed just four hits.

In game two of the afternoon, the Spartans got off to a fast start, plating six runs on seven hits to go up 6-0 early.

Alvernia answered in its half of the first, scoring nine runs on seven hits to take a 9-7 lead. Paciolla got things starting, driving in Reinert on a single to left field. Hope Robinson drove in the next two runs of the inning on a double down the left field, and Alison Kirschner drove in the next two runs of the inning on a single to the right gap to bring in Robinson and Acker. Kirschner then came around and scored on a bases loaded walk on Maggie Loomis' at-bat to make it 6-6. Paciolla then cleared the loaded bases on a double that went off the top of the fence and then bounced back into the outfield to put Alvernia up 9-6.

The Spartans got one back in the top of 2nd on a successful execution of a first and third situation to cut Alvernia's lead down 9-7.

Alvernia pushed the lead back to three runs in the bottom of the third when Reinert scored on a sacrifice hit to second by Paciolla to score Reinert and put Alvernia up 10-7.

The Golden Wolves added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Fouracre drove in Campbell on a single up the middle to put Alvernia up 11-7.

The Spartans threatened in the top of the 7th on a single up the middle that scored a run. They then loaded the bases with two outs, but Alvernia was able to get out of the jam for the 11-7 win.

Reinert went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two walks to lead Alvernia's offense.

Emma Kropkowski picked up the win with a four strikeout performance.

Alvernia returns to action tomorrow with a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader at Eastern.
