Softball Shuts Down Eastern, Locks In #1 Seed

Fouracre and Acker Homer, Acker Records 100th Career Hit

St. David's, Pa. (April 18, 2021) - Alvernia Softball (17-5, 15-5) didn't allow a run in either game of a doubleheader sweep over Eastern University (9-11, 9-11) on Sunday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth softball action at Eastern.

With the doubleheader sweep, and Stevenson University splitting its series with Widener University, Alvernia secured the regular season title and the #1 seed heading into the MAC Championship on May 1st. This is the first time Alvernia will be the #1 seed in the playoffs since the Golden Wolves joined the MAC Commonwealth in 2010.

In game one of the afternoon, Alvernia got things started in the top of the second when Analise Fouracre hit a three-run homer to left field to put the Golden Wolves up 3-0.

Alvernia tacked on its fourth run of the game in the top of the third when Alyssa Acker scored on a wild pitch.

The Golden Wolves added another three in the top of the fifth. Paige Paciolla drove in the first run of the inning on a single up the middle to score Acker. Paciolla then advanced to third on Nicole August's single to left and Paciolla came around to score on an error on the same play. Hope Robinson then drove in the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to right field to score Kerstin Koenig and put Alvernia up 7-0.

Alvernia scored its final two of the game in the top of the sixth to put in place the eight-run rule. Riley Shields drove in the first of the inning, scoring Reinert on a single to center. Koenig then drove in Carlen Lazar, pinch running for Shields, on a sac fly to right for the 9-0 win.

Shields went the distance in the circle for Alvernia, striking out four in the six inning shutout.

Reinter, Acker, and August each finished with two hits for the Golden Wolves. Fouracre finished with three RBIs.

In game two of the afternoon, Alvernia wasted no time getting started. The Golden Wolves put up four in the top of the first. Acker drove in Reinert on a single to left to score the first run of the game. With the bases loaded and two outs, Robinson hit a bases-clearing double to the right gap to put Alvernia up 4-0.

Acker then hit a solo shot inside the left field foul pole to put Alvernia up 5-0.

Alvernia's final run of the game came on a bases loaded walk on Paciolla's at-bat in the top of the sixth to put Alvernia up 6-0.

Ally Decker took the circle for Alvernia in game two, striking out four in her seven inning shutout win.

Acker led Alvernia in game two, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Acker's second hit of the afternoon, her solo home run to left, marked her 100th career hit.

With the wins today, Alvernia locked up the #1 seed atop the MAC Commonwealth. Alvernia awaits the conclusion of the MAC Commonwealth schedule later this week to officially find out its quarterfinal opponent.

Alvernia will close out the regular season with two non-conference series next weekend, starting with Misericordia on Saturday at home. The MAC Commonwealth Championship quarterfinals begin on MAy 1st.
