Reading, Pa. (April 24, 2021) - Alvernia University (18-6) split a Saturday doubleheader with Misericordia University (18-5) with Alvernia taking game one and falling in game two in non-conference softball action at Alvernia.

Alvernia won game one 3-1, but Misericordia rallied late in game two for the 10-8 win.

In game one of the afternoon, Alvernia took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second, with Sarah Reinert driving in the first run of the game on a single through the left side to score Kerstin Koenig. Analise Fouracre then scored Alvernia's second run of the inning on a wild pitch.

The Cougars would get one back in the top of the fourth to cut Alvernia's lead down to 2-1.

Alvernia extended its lead back to two runs in its half of the fourth with Reinert driving in Megan Poley on a sacrifice hit to second to put Alvernia up 3-1.

Misericordia would have the tying run at the plate in both the sixth and seventh, but were unable to convert as Alvernia took the 3-1 win.

Reinert led Alvernia in game one with two hits and two RBIs.

Riley Shields picked up her tenth win of the season in the circle, striking out eight over the complete game.

In game two of the afternoon, Alvernia took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Alvernia first two runs of the inning came off a throwing mistake by Misericordia. Devon Hudson then scored Kerstin Koenig on a single to right, and Hudon and Shields came around to score on an error during Ally Kirschner's at bat.

Misericordia got one back on a solo homer in the fourth, but Hope Robinson put Alvernia back up by five runs in the bottom of the fifth with a sac fly to score Alyssa Acker.

The Cougars tied the game up in the sixth, scoring five runs on three doubles to make it 6-6.

Misericordia then took the lead in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs on a double to the left gap to go up 9-6. The Cougars then added its final run of the game on an RBI single to center to make it 10-6.

Alvernia attempted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh with Shields starting the inning with a leadoff double to right field. Shields then came around to score on a Hudson single. Nicole August then hit a single to right to bring in Hudson and make it 10-8 in favor of Misericordia. Alvernia had the tying run at the plate twice in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to finish the comeback. 

Hudson led Alvernia with three hits and two RBIs and two runs scored in game two. 

Alvernia closes out its regular season tomorrow at Arcadia.
