#1 Softball Advances To Semis With Sweep Over Hood

Reading, Pa. (May 1, 2021) - #1 Alvernia University (22-6) swept #8 Hood College (7-17) in two five-inning games on Saturday at Alvernia to advance to the MAC Commonwealth Championship semifinals next weekend.

The Golden Wolves took game one 10-1 and then took game two 11-0.

In game one of the afternoon, Alvernia started things off with back-to-back triples by Sarah Reinert and Maggie Loomis in the bottom of the 1st. Kerstin Koenig then singled to right center to drive in Loomis. Devon Hudson then reached out a fielder's choice to score the final run of the inning and put Alvernia up 3-0.

The Golden Wolves then put up seven runs in the bottom of the 2nd to go up 10-0. After Hope Robinson and Reinert reached to lead off the inning, Shields singled to left field to drive in Robinson and Reinert. With two on, Paige Paciolla doubled to left field to drive in Acker and Shields. Koenig then tripled to center to drive in two more. Hudson then hit the third extra base hit in a row with a double to left field to score Koenig. Alvernia batted around, with Robinson driving in Hudson for Alvernia's final run of the inning to go up 10-0.

Hood scored a run in the top of the fourth for the 11-1 final.

Koenig led Alvernia with two hits and three RBIs. Riley Shields pitched her 12th win of the season, striking out six and allowing three hits.

In game two of the afternoon, Alvernia again took an early lead in the bottom of the first. Reinert stole home on a 1st and 3rd situation to put Alvernia up 1-0. Paige Paciolla then flew out to left field to score Maggie Loomis and put Alvernia up 2-0.

Like game one, Alvernia again used a big second inning to extend its lead. Robinson started things off for Alvernia with a solo shot over the center field fence. Sara Campbell then doubled to left field and came around to score on Reinert's at-bat. Shields and Acker then hit back-to-back doubles to add two more runs to Alvernia's lead. Paciolla then singled to left to score Acker for the final run of the second inning to put Alvernia up 7-0.

The Golden Wolves added four more runs in the bottom of the third for the 11-0 lead. Shields drove a run in with a single to center to score Reinert. Acker then tripled to right field to score Shields and Loomis. Paciolla then doubled to right to score Acker for Alvernia's final run of the game.

Ally Decker pitched a one-hitter with five strikeouts for the complete game shutout win.

Alvernia advances to the MAC Commonwealth Semifinal with today's swep. The Golden Wolves will host either #4 Messiah or #5 Eastern depending on the outcome of tomorrow's if necessary game.
