Wilkes-Barre Pa. (September 11, 2021)- Alvernia University (2-2) picked up its second win of the year this Saturday with a 3-2 overtime win over Wilkes University (0-3) in non-conference field hockey action.
The Golden Wolves had a dominant first period, holding Wilkes to zero shots in the opening stanza. Alvernia took five shots of its own in the quarter, but without any success as they were unable to find the back of the net.
The second quarter would have more action as the two teams battled back and forth. The Colonels opened up the scoring with a goal in the ninth minute. However, Alvernia would answer just minutes later off a shot by
Felicia Getz from the top of the circle that found the back of the net. The score would be tied going into the half, 0-0.
The second half was just as close with neither team willing to give an inch. Wilkes would eventually net their second goal of the evening with just five minutes left in the quarter. The Golden Wolves would answer as time expired in the period off of a corner with
Madison Potthoff scoring the equalizeroff an assist from Getz.
The fourth quarter would remain scoreless with neither team willing to budge. The two teams would end regulation tied, 2-2. Alvernia would not have to wait long for the game-winning goal as
Brooke Spezialetti would net her first goal of the evening in just 38 seconds to win the game for the Golden Wolves.
Alvernia returns to action Tuesday at Moravian College.
