Reading, Pa (September 18, 2021)- Women's Volleyball took down Cedar Crest and Gwynedd Mercy in two five-set decision as the Golden Wolves improved to 4-6 overall on Saturday afternoon at Alvernia.
Alvernia started out the day strong as it matched up against Cedar Crest in the first contest. The Golden Wolves fought a back and forth first set that resulted in
Olivia Frutiger recording the last two kills of the set to propel Alvernia over the Falcons, 25-23.
Alvernia dropped the second set as Cedar Crest bounced back, 25-22. The Golden Wolves wouldn't stay down for long as they took the third set, 26-24. Cedar Crest claimed the fourth set 25-20, sending the match into the fifth set, 2-2. The Golden Wolves remained resilient as they won the fifth set, 16-14.
In Alvernia's second match of the day, Gwynedd Mercy started out fast as it downed Alvernia in the first set, 25-17. Alvernia responded as it come away with a win in the second set, 28-26. Gwynedd Mercy answered in the third set, defeating Alvernia 25-22. The Golden Wolves came up and evened it at 2-2 with a 25-18 fourth set win. The fifth set went down to the wire, but Alvernia would not be denied as they won the set, 15-13.
Against the Falcons,
Rachel Sipling led all players with 17 kills, two digs, and one block. Frutiger joined the action tallying 13 kills, six digs and one block assist while
Deanna Klunk dished out 14 assists to help lead the way over Cedar Crest, 3-2.
Against the Griffins, Sipling led all athletes with 24 kills, 16 digs, two block assists, and one service ace.
Alexis Schwenk tallied 33 assists while
Elizabeth Gillespie racked up nine kills.
Alvernia returns to action at home on Wednesday against Stevenson University.
