Mustangs Hold Off Golden Wolves, 3-0

Reading, Pa. (Sept. 22, 2021) - Stevenson University (9-2, 2-1) held off late-set pushes by Alvernia University (4-7, 0-3) as the Mustangs came away with a 3-0 win on Wednesday night in MAC Commonwealth Women's Volleyball action at Alvernia.

The Mustangs got off to a fast start, leading the first set 15-9 halfway through. Stevenson appeared to have solid control late in the set, leading 22-16. The Mustangs went on to push the set to set-point at 24-18.

Alvernia would stay in the fight, fending off set-point for the Mustangs six times, pushing the set to a 24-24 tie with all six of Alvernia's points coming off the serve of Alvernia's Olivia Frutiger. The Mustangs took a 25-24 advantage off a kill by Stevenson's Darian Dildy. A second kill by Dildy sealed the 26-24 first set win for the Mustangs.

The Golden Wolves kept pace with the Mustangs early in the second set, with a kill by Sipling tying it up at 3-3. The Mustangs extended their lead to as much as nine, 19-10, late in the second set. Alvernia battled back, holding off three set-points by the Mustangs, but an attack error on the Golden Wolves gave the Mustangs the 25-16 second set win.

The third set was back and forth early, with the Mustangs holding the slight 10-8 lead. Alvernia strung off four straight points - with a kill by Sipling and an ace by Abigail McGinley bookending the run - to take a 12-10 lead over the Mustangs.

The teams traded the lead multiple times over the next few points, with a kill by Sipling giving Alvernia an 18-17 advantage.

The lead would not last as a service error by the Golden Wolves sparked a run of eight unanswered as Stevenson came away with the 25-18 set win and 3-0 match win.

Sipling led Alvernia with 14 kills on 31 attacks. Alexis Schwenk finished with 16 assists and Gabrielle DeLucca finished the night with 15 digs.

Alvernia returns to action on Saturday facing Penn State Harrisburg and Marywood University at the PSU Harrisburg tri-match.
