Reading Pa. (Sept. 25, 2021)- First Year
Gianna DeGregory scored the game-winning goal in an untimed corner after time expired to lead Alvernia University (5-3, 2-0) to a 5-4 over Stevenson University (3-5, 0-1) Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth field hockey action at Alvernia.
Â
The Mustangs started strong, netting two goals in the first ten minutes of the contest. Alvernia answered quickly as
Olivia Gehris recorded her first goal of the contest off an assist by
Brooke Spezialetti. Stevenson ended the first period on top, 2-1.
Â
The Golden Wolves applied pressure early in the second, taking three shots in the first five minutes of the second stanza. Gehris netted her second goal of the contest with
Victoria Strasser dishing out the assist. The teams went into the half locked at 2-2.
Â
Alvernia started the second half strong, as
Madison Potthoff found the back of the net twice in the first five minutes.
Alyssa Krady recorded an assist on Potthoff's first goal, and
Felicia Getz picked up an assist on the second.
Â
Stevenson applied early pressure in the fourth quarter, as Veronica Maring put away the equalizer with Kaitlin Karns recording the assist. The Mustangs continued to push, tallying three shots in the final ten minutes of the contest, but were unable to convert.
Â
The Golden Wolves received a spark late in the fourth as Strasser sent a shot towards the net that went far right. Alvernia continued to pile on the shots in the closing minutes with Potthoff recording two shots of her own in the final seconds of the contest.
Â
Alvernia was then awarded a corner with time ticking down. The Golden Wolves started the corner attempt prior to time expiring, but the clock would hit double zeroes mid-way through the attempt. Field Hockey rules permit corner attempts to continue after time expires, and Alvernia's DeGregory played through the buzzer. DeGregory sent in a shot that slipped past the Stevenson goalie to give Alvernia the 5-4 win.
Â
Hannah Wolfe faced 18 shots making nine saves in the win. Wolfe is undefeated in net, going 5-0 thus far on the season.
Â
The Golden Wolves return to action Wednesday at home against Rowan.
